First Impression
The Roosevelt's drink list opens with a clear statement of intent: Virginia wine is the main character here. At 42 labels, this isn't a sprawling tome, but the curation is sharp enough that you don't miss the size. The neighborhood spot energy is real β lively room, packed tables β but the wine list punches well above its weight class.
Selection Deep Dive
The Virginia focus is genuine and well-executed, not just a token local section bolted onto a California-heavy list. You'll find Barboursville, RDV, Linden Vineyards, Early Mountain, and Lightwell Survey all represented, covering the state's serious producers. California shows up with real muscle too β Dunn Vineyards Cab, Heitz Cellar, and Opus One Overture give the list some West Coast credibility without taking over. The gaps are minor: if you want deep Burgundy or RhΓ΄ne, you're in the wrong room, but that's a deliberate trade-off, not an oversight.
By the Glass
Eighteen by-the-glass options at $11β$14 is an exceptionally generous pour program for a neighborhood restaurant at this price point. The glass list pulls from the same thoughtful Virginia-forward curation as the bottle list, with Barboursville Chardonnay and Viognier both available by the glass at $13 β prices that would look reasonable in 2018, let alone now. Rotation data is limited, but the range across whites, reds, rosΓ©, and sparkling gives you real options regardless of what you ordered.
Barboursville Chardonnay VA '17 β $13/glass
A Virginia Chardonnay from one of the state's most consistent producers, poured at $13 when retail sits around $18. That's a glass markup so thin it's basically doing you a favor β order two.
Linden Vineyards Hardscrabble Chardonnay VA '15
Linden's Hardscrabble is one of the most serious Chardonnays produced on the East Coast, full stop. It gets overlooked because 'Virginia Chardonnay' doesn't carry the same cultural weight as Burgundy or even California, but Jim Law has been quietly making age-worthy whites up in the Blue Ridge for decades. Don't sleep on it.
Opus One Overture CA NV
Overture is Opus One's second wine, built for people who want the logo more than the wine. At whatever premium they're charging here, you can drink RDV Rendezvous β an actual Virginia cult Bordeaux blend that competes with serious Napa β and keep the change.
Dr. Konstantin Frank Dry Riesling NY '19 + BBQ Chicken Wings
Frank's Dry Riesling has the acidity and slight stone-fruit richness to cut through BBQ sauce and cool down the heat without going sweet. It's the kind of pairing that makes people stop mid-bite and reconsider everything they thought they knew about Riesling.
π² The Bottom Line
The Roosevelt is what happens when a neighborhood restaurant actually gives a damn about Virginia wine β fair prices, smart picks, and a glass program that makes it easy to drink well without a second thought. If you care about supporting what's happening in the Virginia wine scene, this is where you eat dinner.
