Wingman Metrics
You walk into The Lakehouse, clock the Cuyahoga River out the window, and feel immediately okay about everything. The wine list arrives and it's 42 labels deep — not trying to be a wine bar, not pretending to be something it isn't. It's a waterfront spot with a fireplace and a list that matches the room.
California dominates, which is no surprise, but the list earns its keep with a reasonable sweep across Italy, France, New Zealand, Oregon, Germany, and Argentina — enough to keep a curious drinker occupied. Napa heavyweights like Cakebread and Duckhorn anchor the top end, while the mid-tier quietly does the heavy lifting. There's no deep-cellar magic here, no grower Champagne hidden in the back, but the list is coherent and honest about what it is. The gaps are real — no skin-contact wines, thin on Southern Hemisphere depth — but for a casual waterfront spot in Cleveland, this is a list that's doing its job.
Eighteen by-the-glass options is a generous pour count for a restaurant at this price point, and the $8–$15 range keeps things accessible without bottoming out on quality. Whispering Angel showing up at $14 a glass is a crowd-pleaser move, but it's a smart one — it fits the vibe, it moves bottles, and nobody's leaving disappointed. We'd like to see more rotation, but what's here covers the bases.
Saldo Zinfandel — $65
Saldo is a Michael Davids / The Prisoner Wine Company label that punches well above its weight in richness and structure. At $65 a bottle in a restaurant setting, you're getting a bold, fruit-forward Zin without getting gouged. Order this next to the smash burger and thank us later.
Duckhorn Napa Cabernet
Everyone reaches past Duckhorn for flashier names, but this is one of the most consistently well-made Napa Cabs in its tier. At $68 it's priced fairly for what's in the glass — structured, reliable, and a natural match for anything coming off the grill. Most tables will scroll right past it, which means more for the people who know.
Cakebread Napa Chardonnay
At $85 a bottle, you're paying a lot for a name that's everywhere. Cakebread is fine — it's just fine — but it's one of the most marked-up labels in the American restaurant ecosystem and you can do significantly better for less money on this very list. It's the wine equivalent of ordering the most expensive item just because it sounds safe.
Whispering Angel Côtes de Provence Rosé + Firecracker Shrimp
The heat and tang from the Firecracker Shrimp needs something with enough freshness and body to stand up without amplifying the spice — Whispering Angel is dry, mineral-edged, and just fruity enough to cool things down. It's the obvious call, but obvious calls exist for a reason.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The Lakehouse isn't going to make any wine destination lists, but it's doing the right things at the right prices for a waterfront spot that's primarily there to feed you well and let you watch the river. Send a friend here with confidence — just steer them toward the Saldo and away from the Cakebread.
University Circle · Cleveland · Regional
Table 45 is a dependable hotel wine list that punches above its Cleveland zip code — it's not adventurous, but it's not embarrassing either. Send a friend here if they want recognizable, quality bottles in a proper setting; steer them toward Jordan and Drouhin and away from the obvious crowd-pleasers.

Flats East Bank · Cleveland · Italian
Lago East Bank is a legitimately strong Italian wine program in a city that doesn't always get credit for having them — the WS Award of Excellence since 2023 is earned. Markups keep it from being a great value play, but if you're going to drop money on a bottle of Barolo anywhere in Cleveland, this is the room to do it.

Shaker Square · Cleveland · French
Edwins is one of the most genuinely interesting restaurant stories in Cleveland — a fine-dining French program run by people earning their place in the industry — and the wine list is good enough to stand on its own merits, mission aside. Send a friend here and tell them to order French across the board, from the escargot to the bottle.

Woodmere · Cleveland · American Steakhouse
J. Gilbert's is a reliable, well-stocked steakhouse list that plays it safe with California heavyweights and charges accordingly — nothing groundbreaking, but the Sunday wine deal is one of the better recurring specials in Cleveland and reason enough to plan around it. Come for the filet, drink better than you expected to.

The Centro is a reliable pour for downtown Cleveland — the list won't surprise you, the prices will sting a little, but it's a competent wine program for a hotel steakhouse anchored in a beautiful room. Send a friend here if they want familiar bottles and a good steak; steer them elsewhere if they're looking for anything off the beaten path.

J. Alexander's has no business having this good of a markup on their wine list, but here we are. It's a chain, it's comfortable, and it's offering pours like Austin Hope Cabernet at prices that would embarrass half the independent restaurants in Cleveland — send a friend here without hesitation.
