Walking into The Ivy Inn, the wine list reads less like a restaurant menu and more like a love letter to Virginia viticulture — and we mean that in the best possible way. It's not trying to be everything to everyone; it's making a deliberate bet on a region that most lists treat as an afterthought. That alone earns some serious respect.
The list runs roughly 80–120 labels and is structured as an all-American program with Virginia carrying the heavy load — and doing it well. Barboursville, Early Mountain, Michael Shaps Wineworks, Blenheim, Lovingston, King Family, and White Hall all show up, giving you a genuine tour of what Charlottesville's wine country is actually capable of. California gets a cameo — the Outlier Pinot Noir being the most notable — and Whispering Angel sneaks in for the rosé crowd. What's missing is any real international depth, so if you came hoping to find Burgundy or Barolo, you're at the wrong table — but that's also kind of the point here.
The by-the-glass program runs roughly 10–14 options at $12–$15, which is reasonable for a fine dining room in Charlottesville. We'd love to see more Virginia pours on the glass list specifically — this is prime real estate for showcasing the local producers that anchor the bottle list. Rotation isn't prominently advertised, which suggests the program is more steady-state than dynamic.
Michael Shaps Wineworks (Virginia) — $40–$50
Michael Shaps is one of the most technically precise winemakers in Virginia, and getting his work at bottle prices in the $40s at a fine dining room is a legitimate deal. These wines often benchmark the region's best.
Lovingston Winery (Virginia)
Most guests reach for the familiar names — Barboursville, Early Mountain — and sleep on Lovingston. It's a small Nelson County producer making genuinely interesting wines that reward the curious diner willing to ask the server what's good.
Whispering Angel Côtes de Provence Rosé 2023
Nothing wrong with Whispering Angel, but at fine dining markup it's overpriced for what it is — a lifestyle brand masquerading as a serious wine. With all these Virginia rosé options available in this region, this pick feels like a concession to brand recognition over actual quality or local relevance.
Early Mountain Vineyards (Virginia) + Seasonal locally sourced seafood preparation
Early Mountain's whites — particularly their Chardonnay and white blends — have the brightness and texture to stand up to the kitchen's seafood-forward seasonal plates without steamrolling the delicate local sourcing. It's a Virginia-on-Virginia moment that the menu and list were basically built for.

The Ivy Inn is doing something genuinely unusual for a fine dining room: building a wine program around a sense of place rather than a sense of prestige. If you're eating in Charlottesville and want to actually drink where you are, this list is worth your full attention.

Oakhart Social's wine list punches well above its weight class for a small plates spot — the range is genuinely exciting and the Virginia representation is the real deal. Markups on the high end will sting if you reach for the Ramey or the top Rhones, but stick to the midrange and the by-the-glass picks and you're drinking well in one of Charlottesville's more interesting rooms.
