Twelve labels on a wine list sounds like a red flag until you realize every single one is a Santa Ynez Valley producer worth knowing — this isn't a lazy short list, it's a curated argument for drinking local. The Gathering Table is an inn restaurant in Ballard, a blink-and-miss-it town just outside Solvang, and it leans fully into its wine country address. Walk in expecting Applebee's wine country theater and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
The list reads like a love letter to Happy Canyon, Santa Maria, and the broader Santa Ynez AVA, with standouts from Lieu Dit, Dragonette, Stolpman, and Crown Point — producers who don't need a lot of explanation if you know the region, but who might convert you if you don't. There's real range here: a Cremant de Bourgogne for bubbles, Low Tide Chenin Blanc from the Jurassic Park Vineyard for the texture crowd, Cin Quin Syrah from Sta. Rita Hills for the people who know Rhône varieties belong in California. The gaps are real — no Italian, no Oregon Pinot, nothing from outside California — but that's a choice, not an oversight. If you came to drink the valley, this list delivers.
All twelve bottles are available by the glass, which is a genuinely generous program for a 12-label list — no gatekeeping here. Pours run $14 to $19 for most options, with the Crown Point Relevant Cab topping out at $28 a glass, which is where the math starts to feel aggressive. Rotation appears limited; this list looks more like a seasonal set than something that changes weekly.
Storm Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County '22 — $16/glass, $60/bottle
Storm is a legit Santa Barbara producer and $60 is one of the more reasonable bottle prices on this list. If you're splitting a bottle over the duck or lamb, this is your move.
Low Tide Chenin Blanc Jurassic Park Vineyard '22
Most tables at a place like this will default to Chardonnay or Pinot Rosé — don't. Chenin Blanc from the Jurassic Park Vineyard in Santa Ynez is a conversation starter and a genuinely interesting glass that most people at the table won't expect to love as much as they do.
Crown Point Relevant Cabernet Sauvignon Happy Canyon '18
At $102 a bottle or $28 a glass, Crown Point is a quality producer but the markup here is punishing. This bottle likely retails in the $45–$55 range, which puts the restaurant at nearly a 2x markup on retail — acceptable in theory, but at $28 a glass you're paying for the zip code more than the wine.
Lieu Dit Cab Franc Happy Canyon Vineyard '22 + Duck
Cab Franc's earthy, slightly herbaceous profile is a natural with duck — the fruit doesn't fight the richness and the lighter tannin structure keeps the pairing from feeling heavy. Lieu Dit is one of the best Cab Franc producers in the valley and Happy Canyon fruit gives it enough structure to hold up to whatever preparation they're running on the bird.

The Gathering Table is the right place to drink Santa Ynez wine in Santa Ynez wine country — focused, specific, and genuinely local in a way most inn restaurants aren't. The markups keep it from being a great wine destination on value alone, but if you're already in Ballard for the weekend, you're exactly where you should be.
