A Catering Menu Is Not A Wine Program

Wingman Metrics
The 1818 Club's wine program lives inside a catering PDF, which tells you everything you need to know before you even open it. Eight labels — Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot, House Wine, House Champagne — listed without a single producer name or price point in sight. This is a wine list designed to satisfy a contract, not a guest.
The list is essentially three grapes repeated twice, a catch-all house wine, and a house Champagne — no regions, no producers, no vintages, no context. There is no evidence of any old-world presence, no by-the-glass variety worth discussing, and no indication that anyone curated this beyond checking the minimum boxes for a hosted bar package. For a venue marketing itself as fine dining, the gap between that promise and what's in the glass is hard to ignore. This reads less like a wine program and more like a bar package negotiated at the last minute.
By-the-glass specifics are unknown — the catering structure suggests pours are tied to hosted bar tiers (Platinum Host Bar, Beer & Wine Host Bar) rather than an a-la-carte glass selection. Whether you're getting a named bottle or a bag-in-box pour is genuinely unclear from available evidence, which is itself a problem.
The Bottom Line
The 1818 Club's wine program is a catering checklist, not a considered list — eight unlabeled varietal names do not constitute a wine program at a fine dining venue. If you're attending an event here, manage expectations accordingly and hope the host bar tier is generous. We wouldn't choose this venue for the wine.

· Duluth · French/European
Kurt's Euro Bistro punches above its weight in the Duluth dining scene — not because the list is long, but because someone clearly cared enough to put three Trimbach selections and two Dow's Tawny Ports on a 22-bottle card. The Alsace focus gives it a genuine identity, and fair bottle pricing means you won't feel punished for ordering well. If you're in the area and want an honest glass of European white with your coq au vin, this is your spot.

Lake Superior Brewing has no business having a wine list this interesting, and we mean that as a full compliment. If you're in Duluth and you want to drink wine somewhere that actually thought about it, this brewpub is the surprising answer.

· Duluth · Cocktail Bar
This is a cocktail bar that slipped a legitimately interesting nine-bottle wine list into the corner without making a big deal about it — and we respect the quiet confidence. Don't come here for a deep cellar experience, but do come here knowing you have real options beyond the well liquor.

Va Bene is presumably doing something right in the kitchen, but the wine list is a two-item afterthought that tells you this place doesn't take wine seriously. Order a glass, enjoy your pasta, and don't expect anything more.

Midi is doing more with 38 labels than most hotel restaurants do with 80. The aromatic white selection alone makes it worth a serious look, and the pricing won't leave you feeling robbed on the way out.

Sammy's is a Duluth institution and the pizza earns its reputation — the wine list is just not the point, and the restaurant isn't pretending otherwise. Order a beer or grab the cheapest glass pour, eat the pizza, and be happy.
