Walking into Ten Spoon feels like stumbling onto a secret — a working organic winery tucked into the Rattlesnake neighborhood of Missoula, where the list is short but every bottle is made right here on the property. This is not a restaurant wine list; it's a winery tasting room that invites you to sit down, slow down, and actually pay attention to what Montana can grow. The casual outdoor seating and live music nights make the whole thing feel more like a backyard party than a commercial operation.
The list is anchored in estate-grown and Northwest-sourced wines, with the winery leaning into cold-hardy varieties that actually thrive in Montana's short growing season. Marechal Foch — a hybrid red that most American wine drinkers have never heard of — is a house standout, and it shows real ambition that Ten Spoon is making it at all. They also produce a Syrah and Pinot Noir, which is genuinely gutsy territory for a Montana winery and speaks to what they're trying to accomplish. The gaps are real: no deep cellar here, no aged library selections, no imported bottles to round things out — but that's the point.
Whites come in a flight of four pours, which is the smart way to explore what's on offer without committing to a full bottle of something you've never tried. Individual glass pours are available as well, with prices landing under $15 across the board — an honest ask for hand-farmed, estate-produced wine in one of the least likely wine regions in the country. Most people see an unfamiliar name and order the Pinot Noir instead. That's a mistake. Marechal Foch is what Ten Spoon was built for — a cold-hardy hybrid that produces an inky, earthy red that punches well above its obscurity. Order it.
Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir in Montana is an uphill battle against climate, and while Ten Spoon deserves credit for attempting it, this is not the Willamette Valley. If you want to drink something that showcases what this winery actually does well, reach for the Foch or a white flight instead.
Syrah + Antipasto Plate
The cured meats, olives, and hard cheeses on the antipasto plate have enough salt and fat to stand up to a peppery estate Syrah without either element bulldozing the other. It's the simplest possible food-and-wine move, and it works every time.
