Wingman Metrics
The Montana Club's wine list is exactly what it looks like: a tight, approachable roster built for a steakhouse crowd that knows what it likes. No surprises, no obscure imports, just familiar names at prices that won't make you wince. Twenty-nine labels might sound thin, but they've done a decent job of covering the bases without padding it with filler.
The list leans hard into California, which tracks for a meat-forward room — you've got Caymus, Jordan, Stags' Leap, Justin, Prisoner, and both a Sonoma and Napa expression of Louis Martini. Oregon gets a nod via Sokol Blosser's Dundee Hills Estate Pinot Noir, and the white side of things pulls in some reliable Pacific Northwest and coastal California producers. What's missing is anything from Europe, anything with age, or anything that would excite a curious drinker — but that's not really who this list is talking to. It's talking to the table ordering a ribeye who wants a Cab they've heard of.
Twenty-one of twenty-nine labels are available by the glass, which is a genuinely impressive ratio — you can basically taste your way through the whole list without committing to a bottle. Prices run $9 to $14 per glass, which is reasonable for 2024. The Mer Soleil Santa Lucia Highlands Reserve Chardonnay at $13/glass and the Brown Family Heritage Cabernet at $13/glass represent the ceiling, and neither feels like a rip-off.
The Bottom Line
The Montana Club's wine list isn't trying to win any awards, and it doesn't need to — it's a fair, functional selection that serves its room well. The glass-pour ratio alone earns respect, and the pricing stays honest across most of the list. If you're in Missoula and want wine with your steak without overthinking it, this gets the job done.

Come for the pizza, skip the wine list deep-dive — there's nothing here worth obsessing over. Order a beer or grab the Chalk Hill Chardonnay and move on.

The Keep is doing something quietly right in Missoula — a 70-label list with real Old World representation, fair by-the-glass prices, and enough depth to reward the curious drinker. It's not a destination wine program, but it's a genuinely solid one, and in this market, that counts for a lot.

Applebee's Missoula isn't a destination for wine — it's a destination for Boneless Wings and a cold domestic beer, and there's zero shame in that. If wine is a priority, order a cocktail and save the bottle for somewhere that cares.

The Shack is worth visiting for the food and the Missoula nostalgia — but the wine list is two bottles deep and priced like it knows you have no other options. Order coffee, order juice, order whatever they're putting in the Vodka Fettuccine, and save the wine drinking for somewhere that's actually trying.

Red Bird is the best wine option in Missoula by a comfortable margin, and the curation is genuinely impressive for its size and location. The markups are uneven enough to require some navigation, but if you stick to the Cristom and the Italian picks, you'll drink well without feeling robbed.

The Pearl Café is doing something genuinely unusual — running a thoughtful, fairly priced wine program in a mountain city where most restaurants would coast on a generic list and nobody would complain. Send your wine-curious friends here without apology; just steer them away from the Ste. Michelle.
