Wingman Metrics
Walking into Social Southern, you expect craft cocktails to run the show — and they do — but the wine list holds its own with more intention than the bar-centric vibe suggests. Fifty-plus bottles spanning France, Spain, Italy, California, and Oregon is not what most people expect from a Johnston Street spot known for duck fat fries. Someone here is paying at least a little attention.
The list leans international in a smart, approachable way: Patient Cottat 'Le Grand Caillou' Sauvignon Blanc brings serious Loire credentials to a room that probably sells a lot of Poppy Cab, and the Comtesse De Malet Roquefort Bordeaux gives anyone who wants to go old-world somewhere to land. The Jean-Claude Mas Côté Mas Crémant de Limoux Brut Rosé is a genuinely interesting fizz pick — it's not Champagne, but it punches well above the price. Gaps exist: the list skews light on anything from South America or the Southern Hemisphere, and depth by region is shallow — you're picking from one or two options per country rather than exploring a bench. Still, for Lafayette, this is a curated effort, not a random assembly.
Seven pours by the glass is a respectable program for a casual Southern table, and at $10 flat, the entry point is honest. The Roger d'Anoia Brut Cava and Serenello Prosecco anchoring the bubbly end are both solid, food-friendly choices that won't embarrass anyone. We'd like to see more rotation and a red option that goes beyond the Laroque Pinot Noir and Poppy Cab, but as a starting lineup, it works.
Patient Cottat 'Le Grand Caillou' Sauvignon Blanc — $10/glass
Patient Cottat is a respected Sancerre-adjacent Loire producer, and getting 'Le Grand Caillou' at a flat $10 pour in Lafayette is genuinely good value. This is the move if you're starting with anything from the raw bar side of the menu.
Jean-Claude Mas 'Côté Mas' Crémant de Limoux Brut Rosé
Most tables at Social Southern are reaching for Prosecco or skipping bubbles entirely. The Crémant de Limoux from Jean-Claude Mas is the smarter play — more complexity, actual brioche notes, and a regional story worth telling. Most people walk right past it.
Cartlidge & Brown Chardonnay
Nothing wrong with it exactly, but Cartlidge & Brown is a grocery store Chardonnay at a restaurant price point. With the Patient Cottat on the same list, there's no reason to settle here.
Comtesse De Malet Roquefort Bordeaux + Chicken & Waffles
The slight earthiness and structure of the Bordeaux cuts through the sweetness of the syrup and the richness of the fried chicken in a way that a lighter red simply won't. It's an unexpected combo that earns its place on the table.
Tuesday–Friday — Half price bottles on wines priced $55 and up during Social Hour, Tuesday through Friday from 3:00pm to 6:30pm.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Social Southern is a Wild Card in the best way — a lively Southern table that slips in legitimate wine options between the craft cocktails and pork debris fries. The half-price bottle program during Social Hour is the real closer: if you're here Tuesday through Friday before 6:30, you're drinking well for very little.

Mazen Grill is the kind of place you can trust to have a drinkable bottle for a special occasion without having to coach your dining companions through anything unfamiliar. The markups sting a little and the list plays it safe, but the range is real and the execution is solid enough to keep us coming back.

Half Shell Lafayette isn't where you go to geek out on wine — it's where you go to eat great oysters with something cold and decent in your glass. For that, the list does exactly what it needs to do, and the pricing is fair enough that we're not holding a grudge.

Downtown / Jefferson St · Lafayette · New Orleans-inspired Southern American, cocktail lounge and jazz club
Whiskey & Vine is a genuinely great place to spend an evening — the vibe, the jazz, and the cocktails are all doing their jobs. But the wine list is riding those coattails hard, charging gouge-level markups on unremarkable bottles while a sommelier watches from the sideline. Order the cocktails, grab a $5 pour at happy hour, and save your wine ambitions for somewhere that respects them.

Bonefish Grill Lafayette isn't a wine destination, but it's not an embarrassment either — it's a reliable corporate list that plays defense, not offense. Order the Riesling, enjoy your fish, and don't overthink it.

Romacelli is a perfectly enjoyable neighborhood wine bar that punches above its weight on Wednesday nights and below it the rest of the week. Come for the food and the atmosphere — just make sure you're there on a Wednesday if wine is the point.

Bon Temps Grill isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be — it's a lively neighborhood spot with a fair, unpretentious list and a Tuesday bottle deal that's genuinely worth planning around. Show up, order the Ripasso, and let the live music handle the rest.
