Wingman Metrics
Walking into Whiskey & Vine, you get the full New Orleans treatment — moody lighting, live jazz, and a cocktail menu that clearly owns the room. The wine list, at 85 labels with 34 by-the-glass options, looks impressive on paper. But flip to the prices and the illusion cracks fast.
The list leans Italian — Della Torre Allegrini Rosso shows up as a regional anchor, and there's a nod to Louisiana spirit with Marie Laveau and the blush-friendly La Vie En Rose. The range covers enough ground to please a mixed table, but the curation feels more quantity-over-quality than deeply considered. California Chardonnay takes up real estate here, which is fine, but the producers sitting in those slots (Raeburn, Sonoma-Cutrer) are grocery-store regulars being sold at four times what you'd pay at Trader Joe's. There are no natural wines, no real deep cuts, and no obvious cellar program to get excited about.
Thirty-four by-the-glass options is a generous number and gives this list its one genuine bright spot — you can explore without committing to a bottle. A featured happy-hour glass at $5 is a legitimate deal if you catch it. Outside of happy hour, though, the glass pours mirror the same value problems as the bottles.
Featured Happy Hour Wine — $5/glass
We don't know exactly what's in the glass during happy hour, but at $5 it's essentially the only time this list becomes worth ordering wine. Show up early, drink well, thank us later.
Della Torre Allegrini Rosso
Most people at a jazz cocktail lounge in Lafayette are ordering a whiskey sour, not an Italian red — which means this one often gets ignored. Allegrini knows what they're doing in the Veneto, and if the markup here is any gentler than the California options, it's the most interesting pour on the list.
Raeburn Chardonnay Sonoma County
At $58 a bottle, you're paying nearly four times retail for a $16 Chardonnay that lives on the bottom shelf of every Total Wine in America. That's not a wine list, that's a penalty.
La Vie En Rose + Shrimp & Grits
A dry rosé with Southern Gulf shrimp is a no-brainer — the wine's acidity cuts through the richness of the grits and keeps the shrimp tasting fresh. La Vie En Rose is approachable enough to not scare anyone at the table and food-friendly enough to actually earn its place.
❌ The Bottom Line
Whiskey & Vine is a genuinely great place to spend an evening — the vibe, the jazz, and the cocktails are all doing their jobs. But the wine list is riding those coattails hard, charging gouge-level markups on unremarkable bottles while a sommelier watches from the sideline. Order the cocktails, grab a $5 pour at happy hour, and save your wine ambitions for somewhere that respects them.

Mazen Grill is the kind of place you can trust to have a drinkable bottle for a special occasion without having to coach your dining companions through anything unfamiliar. The markups sting a little and the list plays it safe, but the range is real and the execution is solid enough to keep us coming back.

Half Shell Lafayette isn't where you go to geek out on wine — it's where you go to eat great oysters with something cold and decent in your glass. For that, the list does exactly what it needs to do, and the pricing is fair enough that we're not holding a grudge.

Bonefish Grill Lafayette isn't a wine destination, but it's not an embarrassment either — it's a reliable corporate list that plays defense, not offense. Order the Riesling, enjoy your fish, and don't overthink it.

Romacelli is a perfectly enjoyable neighborhood wine bar that punches above its weight on Wednesday nights and below it the rest of the week. Come for the food and the atmosphere — just make sure you're there on a Wednesday if wine is the point.

Bon Temps Grill isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be — it's a lively neighborhood spot with a fair, unpretentious list and a Tuesday bottle deal that's genuinely worth planning around. Show up, order the Ripasso, and let the live music handle the rest.

Social Southern is a Wild Card in the best way — a lively Southern table that slips in legitimate wine options between the craft cocktails and pork debris fries. The half-price bottle program during Social Hour is the real closer: if you're here Tuesday through Friday before 6:30, you're drinking well for very little.
