Wingman Metrics
You walk into what feels like a polished European pub — dark wood, craft cocktail energy, handmade sausages on the menu — and then the wine list surprises you. Forty-five labels, a spread of entry-level Europeans alongside Dom Pérignon and Gaja, which is not what you expect at a spot selling Belgian fries. It's an odd but intriguing combination that demands a second look.
The list pulls in two clearly different directions: there's an affordable everyday tier anchored by Italian and Austrian bottles — think Pratsch Grüner Veltliner, Tiamo Montepulciano Rosé, and the Gran Passione Rosso blend — and then a prestige tier that swings hard into Napa Cabs, Burgundy, and vintage Champagne. The Bouchard Père et Fils Pommard 2016 and Gaja Sito Moresco 2018 are genuinely serious wines that feel imported from a different restaurant. Old World Europe gets some love with the Jean Luc Colombo Côtes-du-Rhône and the Villa le Corti Chianti, but the list doesn't go deep on any one region. It's wide, not focused — which works in a place like this, but leaves serious wine drinkers wanting more context.
The by-the-glass program leans into the accessible end of the list, with pours starting at $8 — the Pratsch Grüner and Riondo Prosecco are the kind of easy, food-friendly options that make sense with sausages and fries. The $13 Tribute Cabernet is the top of the glass range we can confirm, which keeps things approachable. There's no obvious rotation happening here; this feels like a set program rather than something that gets refreshed seasonally.
Pratsch Grüner Veltliner, Austria — $8
Eight dollars for a proper Austrian Grüner is a legitimate deal. It's crisp, herby, and cuts right through a plate of rich handmade sausage. Hard to argue with that math.
Gaja Sito Moresco 2018, Langhe Rosso, Piedmont
Most people at Sidecar are ordering a beer or a cocktail, which means this Gaja Nebbiolo-Barbera-Merlot blend is sitting quietly on the list waiting for someone to notice it. At $138 it's not cheap, but it's a genuinely serious bottle from one of Italy's most respected houses — a find in a downtown pub setting.
Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut
At $125 a bottle, you're paying a significant premium for a label that retails widely around $55-60. It's a fine Champagne, but the markup is punishing and you can do better elsewhere on this list for the occasion.
Jean Luc Colombo 'Les Abeilles' Côtes-du-Rhône + Handmade European-style sausages
A southern Rhône blend built on Grenache and Syrah is practically designed to sit next to a plate of well-spiced sausage — the peppery fruit holds up to the richness without fighting it, and it won't blow your budget while you're at it.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Sidecar is a genuinely surprising wine program tucked inside a European pub, and the low-end glass pours are real value — but the prestige tier leans on markups that sting. Come for the Grüner and the sausages; treat the Champagne list as aspirational décor.

TGI Friday's Roanoke is a fine place to grab a beer or a Jack and Coke, but the wine program is a corporate afterthought with steep markups on bottom-shelf bottles. Order a cocktail, save the wine for somewhere that gives a damn.

Shakers isn't a wine destination — it's a reliable neighborhood spot where the wine program does its job without drama. If you're here for ribs and a casual pour, you'll leave satisfied; just don't show up expecting discovery.

Abuelo's wine list exists to check a box, not to enhance your dinner — stick to the cocktails and revisit this list never. If someone at your table insists on wine, go Joel Gott and call it a night.

The markups are honest and the Mollydooker pour is a genuine saving grace, but this list exists to check a corporate box, not to help you drink well. Order the Mollydooker with your steak, skip any bottle over $40, and keep your expectations calibrated to the Bloomin' Onion energy of the room.

The Pine Room is a great spot for a drink and a burger in a handsome historic room, but the wine list is an afterthought in a state with a legitimate wine culture worth showcasing. Order a cocktail or ask for whatever's on tap, and don't make a trip here specifically for the wine.

On the Rise is a genuinely charming spot for baked goods and brunch, but its wine program is an afterthought with three options and zero depth. Order the bread, skip the wine list, and grab a coffee instead.
