The wine list at Sakura Garden is exactly what you'd expect from a busy Hartford sushi and hibachi spot — short, familiar, and built for people who want a glass of something recognizable without having to think too hard. There's no pretension here, which is honestly fine. It's a neighborhood restaurant, not a wine destination.
The list runs about 15-25 bottles and leans heavily on California workhorses and a couple of New World ringers. You've got Paso Robles Cabs from J Lohr, Liberty School, and Treana sitting alongside Oyster Bay's Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from New Zealand, and Sonoma Cutrer's Russian River Chardonnay holding down the whites. Argento Malbec from Argentina and a French rosé from Chateau de Campuget round out the international presence. It's a Greatest Hits collection — nothing that'll make a wine nerd's eyes light up, but also nothing actively bad.
There are an estimated 6-10 options by the glass in the $8-$12 range, which is reasonable for Hartford and appropriate for a casual sushi dinner. Don't expect a rotating program or anything adventurous — what's on the list is what's on the list, and it's been that way for a while. Grab a pour of Oyster Bay or Chateau Ste. Michelle and call it a night.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling, Columbia Valley — $30
Off-dry Riesling and sushi is a legitimately great pairing, and Ste. Michelle's Columbia Valley bottling is well-made, food-friendly, and priced fairly for what you get. It's the smartest order on this list.
Chateau de Campuget Rosé, France
Most people at a hibachi table are reaching for Cab, which means this French rosé gets overlooked. It's a Costières de Nîmes producer with genuine Southern Rhône credibility, and it works across the whole menu — sushi, tempura, even hibachi chicken. Skip the red and grab this.
Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles
Liberty School is reliable supermarket wine, and at restaurant markup it's not winning any value arguments. J Lohr is right next to it on the list and is the better Paso Robles Cab at a similar price point. There's no real reason to land here.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling, Columbia Valley + Tempura Appetizers
The light sweetness and brisk acidity in the Riesling cut right through the tempura batter and play well with any dipping sauce in the mix. It's a classic combo that this list actually makes possible — take the win.

Sakura Garden's wine list won't win any awards, but the pricing is fair, the options are drinkable, and the Riesling alone justifies ordering a bottle. Come for the hibachi, have a glass of something cold, and don't overthink it.

Max's Oyster Bar is exactly the kind of reliable wine program a seafood-focused restaurant should have — thoughtfully built around what's on the plate, staffed by people who can guide you through it. The markup keeps it from being exceptional, but if you stick to the Old World whites, you'll drink very well.

Tavern in the Square West Hartford is a perfectly decent place to watch a game and eat a burger, but the wine list is purely functional — familiar brands, steep markups, and zero curation. Stick to draft beer or a cocktail unless a glass of Prosecco is all you need.

Max's Trumbull Kitchen is a reliable wine stop elevated by a genuinely smart focus on seafood-friendly whites — just don't pay full price when you can come back on Thursday and get the whole list at half off. That changes the math considerably.
