Wingman Metrics
Walk in expecting a standard seafood spot wine list — you know, a Pinot Grigio, a Sancerre, maybe a token Malbec — and instead you get 150 pours and four Virginia wines on tap. That's not what we expected either. This place has clearly thought about its list more than the average fish house.
The headline here is the local Virginia commitment: at least 12 Virginia wines by the glass, with Early Mountain Rosé and Blenheim Chardonnay anchoring the tap program alongside two other unnamed Virginia pours. That's a meaningful curatorial choice in a state where wine tourism is finally getting its due. Beyond the local emphasis, the broader 150-selection program implies a solid domestic and international spread, though the depth of that international range is harder to verify from what's publicly available. The sweet spot is clearly in the glass-pour game — this is not a restaurant trying to move expensive bottles.
With 150 total pours and a $10–$16 per glass price band, the by-the-glass program is the entire point of coming here for wine. Four wines on tap is a smart move in a casual seafood setting — fresher pours, less waste, better value. The Virginia wine by-the-glass count alone (12+) puts most fine dining rooms to shame on the local front.
Early Mountain Rosé (on tap) — $10–$12
Early Mountain makes some of the best rosé in Virginia and getting it on tap at a seafood spot means you're drinking it fresh, probably at a fraction of what you'd pay at the winery tasting room. Order it with raw oysters and don't overthink it.
Blenheim Chardonnay (on tap)
Blenheim Vineyards — Dave Matthews' winery, yes, but don't let that put you off — makes a Chardonnay that drinks like a restrained Burgundy-adjacent white, not the oaky mess the name might conjure. On tap at a coastal-vibes seafood restaurant in Charlottesville, it's genuinely worth your attention.
Any anonymous domestic white by the bottle at the top of the price range
At $90/bottle, you're nudging the upper ceiling of a list that really shines at the glass-pour level. Without clearer visibility into what's sitting at the top of the bottle list, we'd keep your spend in the $10–$14 glass range where this program actually earns its confidence.
Early Mountain Rosé + Raw Oysters
Saline, mineral-driven oysters and a dry Virginia rosé with fresh acidity are basically made for each other. The rosé has enough fruit to soften the brine without drowning it. Simple, correct, and hard to argue with.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Public Fish & Oyster doesn't look like a wine destination on paper, but the Virginia-forward tap program and genuine glass-pour depth make it a genuine Wild Card worth knowing about. If you're eating oysters in Charlottesville, this is where you drink local.
Downtown Mall · Charlottesville · Steakhouse / American
Prime 109 is one of the best wine programs in Virginia, full stop — deep list, a sommelier who clearly curated it with intention, and picks that reward curiosity over brand recognition. The markup stings, but in a room this good, with bottles this interesting, you're probably going to forgive it.

The Bistro at Boar's Head isn't a wine destination, but it doesn't embarrass itself either — especially for a resort list, the Virginia producer support is genuine and worth ordering. If you're on property, lean local and you'll leave satisfied.

The Mill Room earns its place as a reliable destination for Virginia wine in Charlottesville — the local section is the real draw, and if you lean into it, you'll drink well. Just go in knowing the markups reflect the resort address, and order accordingly.

Maya isn't a destination wine list, but it's a thoughtful one — Virginia-forward, fairly priced, and with a Wednesday half-price program that makes it one of the better mid-week wine deals in Charlottesville. Show up on a Wednesday, order the Horton Cab Franc, and tell your friends.

Oakhart Social's wine list punches well above its weight class for a small plates spot — the range is genuinely exciting and the Virginia representation is the real deal. Markups on the high end will sting if you reach for the Ramey or the top Rhones, but stick to the midrange and the by-the-glass picks and you're drinking well in one of Charlottesville's more interesting rooms.

Anthony's HomePort Olympia isn't trying to be a wine destination and it doesn't need to be — it's a dependable, locally-focused list that does the job without embarrassing itself. If you're eating well-sourced Northwest seafood on the water, these wines will get you there.

Skull Creek Boathouse is not a wine destination, and it doesn't try to be — the sunset over the creek is doing the heavy lifting. But the list is priced fairly, the glass selection is wide enough to find something that works, and for a high-volume waterfront spot, that's honestly enough.

Poseidon isn't a wine destination, but it's a competent coastal list that gets the job done if you order strategically. Stick to Oregon and Italy, dodge the Merryvale, and you'll drink well enough to enjoy that waterfront view.
