Wingman Metrics
Walking into Porters, the wine list signals ambition — this isn't a steakhouse that phoned it in with a Cab and a house white. A Wine Spectator Award of Excellence is hanging on the wall, and 100-plus labels across multiple regions backs it up. College Station doesn't have many rooms doing this, which makes it feel like a genuine find.
The list leans hard into California, which makes sense for a wood-fired steakhouse crowd — Caymus, Jordan, Rombauer, Far Niente, and Duckhorn anchor the selections with names diners recognize and trust. That said, the multi-region ambition keeps things from feeling like a grocery store shelf; there's enough breadth to reward someone who wants to wander beyond Napa. The gap is the usual one: bold reds dominate, and lighter-touch options like Pinot Noir or anything from the Loire feel underrepresented. Still, 100-150 labels in a college town is a real commitment.
Fifteen to twenty-five pours by the glass is a strong lineup for this market, running $12–$25 a pop. The range covers enough ground that you're not stuck choosing between two uninspired options. Wednesday's half-price glass program — open to 6 PM — turns this into one of the better wine deals in College Station, full stop.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley — $XX/glass (50% off Wednesdays)
Jordan is a legitimate Alexander Valley Cab that regularly outpunches its retail price — catching it at half off on a Wednesday is the move. This is exactly what the Wine Day promotion was built for.
Duckhorn Merlot Napa Valley
Everyone reaches for the Cab at a steakhouse. Duckhorn's Merlot is the sleeper — plush, structured, and frankly better with the lamb chops than most Cabs on this list. Most tables walk right past it.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Caymus is everywhere, and at steakhouse markup it's going to cost you. It's a fine wine, but you're paying a premium for the label recognition at this point. There are better values on this list.
Rombauer Chardonnay Carneros + Fire Roasted Branzino
Rombauer Chard is rich and buttery enough to hold its own against the char from the wood fire, while the Carneros fruit keeps it bright enough not to bulldoze the fish. It's the most complete pairing on the menu.
Wednesday — Wine Day every Wednesday — 50% off all by-the-glass wines from open until 6 PM.
The Bottom Line
Porters is doing real wine work in a market that mostly doesn't bother — solid list, a sommelier on staff, and a Wednesday glass program that's genuinely worth planning around. Bring someone you want to impress; just steer them away from the Caymus.

12 Rooftop Bar is a great place to watch the sunset and drink something cold — but if wine is your reason for coming, you're going to be disappointed. Order a cocktail, enjoy the view, and save the wine night for somewhere else.

Pablo's is a solid taco spot that treats wine as a legal obligation rather than a point of pride. Order the margarita, enjoy the tacos, and if you must have wine, grab the Masi and call it a night.

J. Cody's is clearly here for the meat, not the wine — and honestly, that's fine, but at least price the bottles fairly if you're going to phone it in. Order a Shiner Bock, eat the brisket, and save your wine curiosity for somewhere that returns the favor.

This is not a wine destination, and Red Lobster isn't pretending otherwise. If someone in your group insists on wine with their Cheddar Bay Biscuits, point them toward the Riesling and move on.

Fish Daddy's wine list is the dining equivalent of a reliable pickup truck — it gets you where you're going without any fuss, but don't expect it to take any scenic routes. Send a friend here for the seafood; just coach them on where to spend and where to save on the wine list.

PRESS is the rare place where a 2,700-bottle list actually delivers — deep, well-stored, and staffed by people who know what they're talking about. The pricing is steep by any honest measure, but if Napa Cabernet is your religion, this is the cathedral.

Ruth's Chris Mauna Lani does exactly what it promises: a deep, California-forward wine list served in proper glassware at steep resort prices inside a flawless steakhouse setting. Vince Lombardi's wine list won't win any awards for creativity, but it's competent, well-suited to the menu, and it won't embarrass the kitchen. If you're here for a prime steak and a reliable bottle of Jordan, you'll leave happy — just don't come looking for discovery.
