Solid pours for a pizza-and-Chianti night

The wine list at Piesanos reads like a greatest hits of grocery store-friendly labels — Josh Cellars, La Crema, Caymus — all in one tidy, laminated lineup. It's not trying to impress anyone, and it doesn't need to. This is a pizza joint near a college campus, and the list reflects exactly that audience.
Seventeen labels split between California and Italy, which is about as on-brand as it gets for a stone-fired pizza place. You've got your Banfi Chianti representing the Italian side, which is a reasonable call, and the California contingent runs the gamut from Josh Cellars entry-level to a $99 Caymus — a curious stretch for a casual dining room. The Alexander Valley Chardonnay and Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling round out the whites with some regional variety, but there's no Pinot Grigio or Vermentino in sight, which feels like a missed layup for a pizza-focused menu. The list is narrow and safe, but it covers enough bases that most tables won't be left hanging.
With 15 of the 17 labels pourable by the glass, Piesanos is essentially running an all-BTG program, which is genuinely useful for groups where everyone wants something different. Pours come in two sizes — 6oz and 9oz — and prices top out at $14 and $21 respectively, which is fair for the market. Rotation doesn't appear to be a thing here; this list feels like it's been the same for a while.
Banfi Chianti Italy — $8/6oz glass
Chianti with stone-fired pizza is a no-brainer, and at the lower end of the glass price range, this is the most honest pour on the menu. Banfi is a reliable, food-friendly producer and this is exactly the kind of wine that earns its keep alongside a margherita.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling Columbia Valley
Everyone at the table is ordering red with pizza and ignoring this, which is a mistake. Ste. Michelle's Columbia Valley Riesling is one of the most consistent values in American wine — bright acidity, a touch of sweetness, and it handles a spicy arrabbiata or a white pizza better than most of the Cabs on this list.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
At $99 a bottle, Caymus always looks like a splurge worth making — until you check retail and realize you're paying a serious premium for a wine that's become more of a brand than a benchmark. It's fine wine, but it doesn't belong on a pizza restaurant wine list at that price. Order the Simi Cab instead and spend the difference on another pie.
Banfi Chianti Italy + Stone-fired pizza
High-acid Sangiovese and tomato sauce is one of the oldest tricks in the book for a reason — the wine cuts through the fat, lifts the tomato, and makes both taste better. It's the most Italian thing you can do at a table that already has a stone-fired pizza on it.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Piesanos isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be — it's a reliable neighborhood pizza spot with enough glass pour variety to keep a mixed table happy without anyone feeling stuck. Skip the Caymus, lean into the Chianti, and call it a win.
