Wingman Metrics
The list opens with a confident lean into California — specifically Napa — and doesn't pretend to be anything else. With 125 selections and a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence on the wall, this is a waterfront restaurant that takes wine more seriously than most spots where you can watch boats drift by. It's not adventurous, but it's not embarrassing either.
Pier 290 plays to its crowd: a Napa-forward lineup anchored by recognizable names like Caymus, Silver Oak, Far Niente, and Duckhorn. There's real depth in the Cabernet category — Mayacamas and Realm Cellars showing up on the same list as Quilt is a legitimate range of price points and prestige. New Zealand gets a token appearance via Frenzy Sauvignon Blanc, Champagne checks in with Veuve Clicquot, and Paso Robles fills in some mid-tier red space with Bezel by Cakebread. What's largely missing: Burgundy, Rhône, Italy, Spain — basically anything that would suggest curiosity beyond the California comfort zone.
By-the-glass specifics weren't available during our research, which is itself a yellow flag — a list this size should have a visible, curated glass program front and center. Based on the bottle lineup, expect the pours to skew California and approachable. If Frenzy Sauvignon Blanc is pouring by the glass, it's a safe, crowd-pleasing option for a lakeside afternoon.
Bezel by Cakebread, Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon — $45
At the floor of the bottle range, Bezel by Cakebread delivers the Cakebread pedigree without the Napa sticker shock. It's the move if you want something solid without committing to a three-figure bottle while the sun's still up.
Mayacamas Napa Valley
Most tables here are grabbing Caymus on autopilot, which means the Mayacamas is sitting there for the people who know. This is an old-school Napa producer making structured, age-worthy Cabernet that doesn't play the fruit-bomb game — it's a genuine find on a list that mostly caters to the familiar.
Veuve Clicquot Champagne
Veuve at a restaurant is almost always a markup trap, and lakeside dining doesn't change the math. You're paying for the yellow label name recognition. There's no grower Champagne, no alternative to make it interesting — just the default celebrity bubbly at a premium you didn't need to pay.
Far Niente Chardonnay + Grilled Lake Fish
Far Niente's Chardonnay is rich but disciplined — enough oak and texture to feel like a treat, without steamrolling the delicate flavor of whatever's fresh from the lake. It's the most natural match on the list for a waterfront menu built around lighter proteins.

Pier 290 earns its Wine Spectator nod by doing California well in a place where the bar could easily be much lower. If you're a Napa loyalist eating waterfront in Wisconsin, you'll be happy — just don't come expecting to go off the beaten path.

Crafted Americana's wine program is resort-standard in the fullest sense: recognizable, priced for convenience, and unlikely to generate any complaints or any real excitement. If you're at The Ridge for the weekend and want a solid glass of Cab with your prime rib, you'll be fine — just don't come expecting a discovery.
