Old-school Akron institution hides a real wine list

Wingman Metrics
Walking into a cash-only Italian joint that's been slinging pizza since 1949, you don't exactly expect a curated California Coast wine program β but here we are. The list is compact at 22 labels, but someone clearly gave a damn when putting it together. It punches well above its weight class for a no-frills Akron neighborhood institution.
The list leans heavily into Central Coast and Monterey County California, with a tight roster of producers β Pessagno, Puma Road, McIntyre, Kori, Cru Winery, and Tondre Grapefield β that you'd more likely spot at a wine bar than a checkered-tablecloth pizza spot. There's a real thread of intentionality here: multiple Pessagno labels, the Tondre Grapefield Pinot Noir (a legitimately serious Santa Lucia Highlands bottling), and a Cru Winery AlbariΓ±o that signals someone's actually thinking beyond Pinot Grigio. The Italian tie-ins are minimal β Prosecco and Moscato in 187ml splits β which feels like a missed opportunity given the concept, but the California selections more than carry the room. Reds slightly outnumber whites, which makes sense given the lasagna-and-pizza crowd.
Twenty-one of the 22 labels are available by the glass, which is almost absurdly generous and makes this a genuine by-the-glass destination. Pours run $9.50 on the low end up to $21.99, with most options clustered in the $10β$16 range β reasonable for the quality on offer. There's no obvious rotation program in place, so what you see is likely what you get visit to visit.
Pessagno Chardonnay 2020 β $10.50/glass
Pessagno is a respected Monterey producer and their Chardonnay punches well above a $10.50 price point. At $38 a bottle, you're drinking real wine at diner prices β this is the move if you're splitting a bottle over lasagna.
Tondre Grapefield Pinot Noir 2021
Most people at Luigi's are grabbing a Meiomi and calling it a night, but the Tondre Grapefield is a single-vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot that most wine bars would charge significantly more for. It'll get overlooked every time on a menu sandwiched between the Meiomi and the Estancia Cab, which makes it your secret weapon.
Meiomi Pinot Noir 2023
Meiomi is fine β it's just grocery store Pinot at a restaurant markup. When the Tondre Grapefield is sitting right there on the same list, ordering the Meiomi is leaving serious quality on the table for marginal savings.
Cru Winery GSM 2022 + Pepperoni Pizza
A GSM β Grenache, Syrah, MourvΓ¨dre β brings the right mix of fruit, spice, and savory depth to stand up to salty pepperoni and tomato sauce without steamrolling it. It's a more interesting call than the reflexive Cab, and it actually works harder with the pizza.
π² The Bottom Line
Luigi's is a cash-only Akron legend that has no business having a wine list this thoughtful β and that's exactly why we like it. Don't sleep on the California Coastal producers hiding behind the checkered tablecloths.

Come for the seafood β the Shrimp & Grits and Crab Cake have genuine fans β but come on a Tuesday when the bottles are half off, because that's the only time the wine program makes financial sense. Any other night, order a cocktail.

East Akron Β· Akron Β· Japanese / Hibachi
Hibachi Japan's wine list isn't going to make anyone's bucket list, but it's priced fairly, covers the basics, and won't embarrass you on date night. Order the Riesling or Pinot Gris, enjoy the show, and don't overthink it.

Montrose / Fairlawn Β· Akron Β· Seafood
Bonefish Grill Fairlawn won't give you a wine moment worth texting about, but it won't rip you off either β and in the chain restaurant landscape, that clears the bar. Show up during Social Hour, grab a Kim Crawford, and focus on the fish.

Galaxy's Wine Room is the best wine program in the Akron orbit, and it's not particularly close β but the steep markups and thin by-the-glass selection hold it back from true destination status. Come with a budget, order a bottle, and skip the sticker shock on the Napa end of the list.
