Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Los Agaves De La Vina feels like an afterthought — a short roster of Central Coast California standards that nobody sweated over. It's not offensive, but it's not trying either. If you're here for the mole and the margaritas, you're in the right place; if you're here for wine, adjust your expectations accordingly.
The list clocks in around 15-25 bottles with a tight California focus — Santa Barbara County and Edna Valley are the primary hunting grounds, which at least makes geographic sense. You'll find Margerum Sauvignon Blanc representing some local credibility, Carr Pinot Noir as the lone standout, and a handful of safe mainstream names like Wild Horse filling the gaps. There's nothing from Baja, nothing adventurous to match the kitchen's heritage, and no attempt to stretch beyond the most comfortable California comfort zone. The lack of any Mexican wine or even a nod toward the cuisine's homeland is a missed opportunity that's hard to ignore.
Four to six pours by the glass, ranging from $9 to $14, with a Pinot Noir, likely a Chardonnay, and a house red and white anchoring the program. The house pours sit at $5, which sounds appealing until you realize the retail on that wine is roughly the same. Rotation appears nonexistent — this list has the energy of something laminated years ago and never revisited.
Carr Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County 2020 — $54
At a 69% markup over a $32 retail price, this is the only bottle on the list where the restaurant isn't gouging you. Carr is a legit Santa Barbara producer with real terroir chops, and this is the one pick that actually belongs on a wine list worth caring about.
Margerum Sauvignon Blanc Santa Barbara County
Margerum is a respected local producer that most diners here will walk right past in favor of something they recognize. It's the most thoughtful buy on the list and actually has something to say alongside the brighter, herbaceous dishes on the menu.
Edna Valley Chardonnay
At $38.40 on a wine retailing around $12, this is a 220% markup on a bottle you could grab at any grocery store. There is no version of this math that works in your favor. Order a mezcal cocktail instead.
Margerum Sauvignon Blanc Santa Barbara County + Taquitos Botaneros
The crisp acidity and citrus-forward character of the Margerum cuts right through the fried crunch of the taquitos and stands up to the salsa without getting steamrolled. It's the kind of match that makes you wonder why more Mexican restaurants lean into local SB whites.
❌ The Bottom Line
Los Agaves De La Vina earns its reputation on the food side, but the wine list is a quietly overpriced, low-effort lineup that the kitchen deserves better than. Grab the Carr Pinot if you must drink wine, but honestly — order the mezcal and come back happy.
Hendry's Beach / Arroyo Burro · Santa Barbara · Seafood, American
Come for the Cioppino and the Pacific views, not the wine list — this is a beach spot that coasts on scenery while charging grocery-store-brand prices like they're cellar selections. If you're a wine-first diner, grab a bottle from a Santa Barbara producer before you arrive and ask about corkage.

Downtown · Santa Barbara · Californian / American bistro with European influences
Jane is a neighborhood restaurant that built a wine list with actual intention, and in Santa Barbara's crowded dining scene, that matters. Markup could loosen up and the by-the-glass situation needs clarity, but the bottles on this list are worth your attention.

The Chase is a solid neighborhood Italian with a wine list that plays it very safe — you'll find what you're looking for if what you're looking for is Caymus, but check the markups before you order on autopilot. Stick to the European wildcards and the local Santa Barbara pours for the best value on the table.

Montecito · Santa Barbara · Italian
Osteria Montecito has the bones of a genuinely good Italian wine program — the right regions, some interesting local producers, recognizable prestige bottles — but the pricing is aggressive enough to sour the experience before the first sip. Stick to the Santa Barbara County pours, avoid the imported crowd-pleasers, and maybe order a Negroni instead.

Tydes is the right wine in the right setting — local producers, a knowledgeable team, and glassware that takes itself seriously. The resort markup is real and unavoidable, but if you stay in the Santa Barbara County section of the list, you'll drink well and feel good about it.

Convivo isn't trying to be a wine destination — it's a coastal Italian restaurant with a smart, locally-rooted list and prices that don't embarrass anyone. Show up at 2 PM on a weekday for $9 rosé and ocean views and tell us we're wrong.

Xochimilco is not a wine destination, but it's doing more with its wine list than most restaurants twice its ambition level. If you're eating in Yakima wine country and want something local in your glass with your enchiladas, this is a legitimate option.

Abuelo's wine list exists to check a box, not to enhance your dinner — stick to the cocktails and revisit this list never. If someone at your table insists on wine, go Joel Gott and call it a night.

Come to Taqueria Jalisco for the tacos and combination plates — they're the reason people keep showing up. The wine list is an afterthought dressed up in a $25 price tag, and you're better off with a margarita or a cold beer.
