Wingman Metrics
Walking into Locavino feels like stumbling onto a secret β a proper wine cafe tucked into downtown Silver Spring where the list punches well above what the counter-service setup would lead you to expect. The Italy-Spain-Maryland trifecta is plastered all over this thing, and it actually delivers. A Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2020 isn't a fluke.
Eighty to 120 bottles isn't massive, but Locavino earns every inch of its list. Italy leads with heavy hitters like Antinori from Tuscany and Masi Amarone from the Veneto β names that belong on lists twice this size. Spain shows up strong through Bodegas Muga in Rioja and Alvaro Palacios, which is a legitimately exciting inclusion for a neighborhood cafe. The real twist is the Maryland section: Black Ankle Vineyards and Boordy Vineyards are serious local producers that most wine lists in this city ignore entirely, and Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard rounds out a surprisingly credible home-state showing.
Twelve to twenty pours by the glass is a generous spread for a spot this size, and the $10β$18 range keeps things accessible without feeling like a race to the bottom. We'd love to see more rotation here β it reads a little static β but the quality floor is higher than most neighborhood spots in the county.
Bodegas Muga Rioja β $40s
Muga is one of the most dependable names in Rioja and shows up on lists twice the price of what Locavino is charging. Tempranillo with structure and a little oak smoke β this is the bottle to order.
Black Ankle Vineyards
Most people walk past the Maryland section like it's a footnote. Don't. Black Ankle is one of the most serious wineries on the East Coast, and getting it at a neighborhood wine cafe is a genuine find β especially if you've never given Maryland wine a real shot.
Masi Amarone
Amarone is a big, rich wine that demands proper cellar temperature and the right glassware to show its best. In a casual counter-service setting, you're not getting the full experience, and the price point for Amarone means you're paying for something that works better at a white-tablecloth spot. Save this one for a different night.
Alvaro Palacios + Wine-marinated burger
Palacios typically works with Garnacha from Priorat or Bierzo β dark fruit, earthy backbone, enough acid to cut through a fat, wine-marinated patty. This is exactly the kind of pairing that makes a casual meal feel like a decision you made on purpose.
π² The Bottom Line
Locavino is a legitimate wine destination hiding inside a neighborhood cafe, and the Maryland producer support alone makes it worth a visit. If you live anywhere near Silver Spring and haven't been, you're leaving good bottles on the table.
East Rapid City Β· Rapid City Β· American
This is a wine list that exists purely because restaurants are expected to have one. Don't come to Applebee's for wine β but if you're already here and you need a glass, the Mondavi Cab won't embarrass you.

Bloomington Β· Bloomington Β· American
You're not coming to Hy-Vee Market Grille for a wine revelation β but on a Wednesday, with half-price pours and half-price sushi, it's one of the better casual deals in town. Manage expectations, bring cash, and embrace the absurdity.

This is a wine list for people who need wine with dinner and aren't interested in making it a thing β and it delivers exactly that without embarrassing anyone. If wine is important to your night, eat somewhere else; if you just want a glass of something recognizable while you watch the Gulf, you'll be fine.
