Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Lazy Dog reads like the endcap of a grocery store wine aisle — familiar faces, zero surprises. You're not here for wine discovery, and the list knows it. It's functional in the way a gas station is functional: it gets you somewhere, but no one's proud of it.
The lineup is a greatest-hits parade of California's most-marketed bottles: Josh Cellars, Kendall-Jackson, Meiomi, Joel Gott. These are brands built for visibility, not depth — you've seen them on every chain restaurant menu from here to Minneapolis. There's no regional exploration, no small producers, no attempt to reflect the fact that you're sitting in one of the most wine-rich states in the country. The list plays it completely safe, which at a national chain isn't shocking, but it's still a missed opportunity when good California QPR bottles exist at the same price points.
The glass pours top out around $14, which puts you in Josh Cellars Cab or Meiomi Pinot territory — wines that are fine but carry serious grocery-store energy. There's no rotation to speak of, and don't expect anyone to walk you through the options with any conviction. Order what you recognize and move on.
Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc — $10
At the lower end of the glass price range, the Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc is at least crisp and food-friendly — it's the least offensive pick on a list that isn't trying very hard.
La Marca Prosecco
It's not a hidden gem in any serious wine sense, but at a casual comfort-food spot, a glass of La Marca Prosecco before your Chicken Pot Pie is genuinely more fun than you'd expect. Sometimes you just want bubbles and nobody to judge you.
Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay
KJ Chardonnay retails for around $14 a bottle. Paying $12-$14 a glass here is a 4x-plus markup on one of the most mass-produced Chardonnays in America. Hard pass.
Meiomi Pinot Noir + TV Dinner Fried Chicken
Meiomi's soft, slightly sweet fruit profile actually softens the saltiness of the fried chicken without fighting it. It's not a sophisticated pairing, but it works in the same way the whole restaurant works — unpretentious and easy.
❌ The Bottom Line
Lazy Dog earns its name when it comes to wine — the list is on autopilot and the markup on supermarket staples is hard to justify. Stick to the craft beer or a cocktail and save your wine enthusiasm for somewhere that returns the favor.
La Jolla / Torrey Pines · Chula Vista · Regional California Cuisine / American Fine Dining
A.R. Valentien is doing something rare for a hotel restaurant: it's built a wine program that would stand on its own even without the Pacific Ocean views. Send your people here — just book ahead and don't skip the wine list.

La Jolla · Chula Vista · Italian
Marisi is a reliable Italian wine list with genuine ambition hiding behind a steep markup structure — the producers are right, the regions are right, but you'll pay for the privilege. Go for the Produttori Barbaresco and the Pre-Phylloxera Barbera, and you'll leave satisfied.

La Jolla · Chula Vista · Contemporary American
Nine-Ten is a genuinely good restaurant with a competent wine program — the sommelier is present, the list is legitimate, and the setting earns the price of admission. But the markups are aggressive enough that you'll want to be selective, because this list can eat your wallet if you reach for the obvious names.

Gaslamp Quarter · Chula Vista · Modern Steakhouse / Contemporary American
STK San Diego is a perfectly functional steakhouse wine list — it does exactly what it promises and absolutely nothing more. Come for the atmosphere and the beef, lean into happy hour if wine value matters to you, and don't show up expecting to be surprised.

Coronado · Chula Vista · Modern steakhouse / chophouse
Stake is the real deal — a 1,700-bottle list with genuine sommelier guidance and a kitchen that integrates wine into the experience rather than just selling it alongside. The pricing is steep, because this is Coronado and this is a serious steakhouse, but if you're already ordering a $75 Wagyu, the cellar absolutely earns its place at the table.

Downtown San Diego (East Village) · Chula Vista · Modern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern–inspired Californian
Callie is one of the most intentional wine programs in San Diego — curated, regionally coherent, and staffed by people who actually know what's in the cellar. The markups will cost you, but if you're going to spend, this is a list worth spending on.
