Wingman Metrics
You don't expect to find Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a Jura Savagnin on a wine list in the Pike Lake area of Duluth. But here we are. Whoever built this 27-label list has opinions, and they're the right ones.
For a 27-bottle list, this thing punches hard. The Pacific Northwest gets proper representation — Ovum's Big Salt blend from Dundee and Andrew Latta's Concrete Albariño from Washington are the kinds of picks that signal a buyer who actually shops. France shows up across Loire, Rhône, Jura, and Champagne, which is a lot of intellectual real estate for a supper club on the edge of town. Italy earns its keep with an Oddero Barolo and Angelo Negro Nebbiolo from Piedmont. The California section runs a little safe with Adelsheim and a Scribe Cab, but Ridge Geyserville keeps it honest.
Ten pours by the glass at $10–$14 is a reasonable spread for this market. The Adelsheim Pinot Noir at $14 a glass is the anchor and a solid one. We'd love to know how often the BTG list rotates, but even static, this beats most of what you'll find within 30 miles.
Domaine Pepiere 2023 Melon de Bourgogne — $19 on Wednesday (half price)
Muscadet from one of the Loire's most respected producers at half price on Wednesday nights — $38 is already fair for Pépière, $19 is a steal. This is your move.
Domaine Grand Arbois 2023 Savagnin, Jura, France
Most people at a Minnesota supper club are going to walk right past a Jura Savagnin. Don't be most people. This oxidative, nutty, completely singular white is the most interesting bottle on the list and almost nobody will order it.
Scribe 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
At $92, this is the list's ceiling, and Scribe Cab — however enjoyable — isn't a $92 bottle anywhere with context. There are better places to spend your money on this list.
Angelo Negro & Figli Nebbiolo, Piedmont, Italy + Roasted duck or braised short rib (supper club staple)
Nebbiolo's high acid and firm tannins are built for rich, fatty proteins. A braised short rib or roasted duck — the kind of thing a New American supper club does well — will soften the wine's edges and let that dark cherry and tar core come through.
Wednesday — Half price on select bottles marked with *** including Domaine Pepiere 2023 Melon de Bourgogne ($38→$19), Ana Maria Cumsille 2023 Malbec ($54→$27), Valravn 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon ($54→$27), Ercole 2024 Barbera/Dolcetto Rosé ($38→$19), and Terre dei Buth Rosé Glera/Raboso ($28→$14).
🎲 The Bottom Line
Lake Effect is quietly doing something real with wine in a place that could easily get away with a grocery store list. Wednesday half-price night alone is worth a trip.
Woodland · Duluth · Pizza, American Grill
Bulldog Pizza & Grill is a perfectly good neighborhood pizza spot that has no business being evaluated for its wine program, because there isn't really one. Drink the beer, enjoy the pizza, and save your wine curiosity for a different night.

Miller Hill · Duluth · Italian
Come for the never-ending pasta bowl and the breadsticks; the wine program is an afterthought that charges you for the privilege of being ignored. If you want a real glass of wine with dinner, this is not your night.

Canal Park · Duluth · Casual Italian / American
Green Mill is a solid pizza-and-a-beer kind of place, and the wine list knows it — it's not trying to be anything more than a functional afterthought. Send a friend here for deep dish and a cold drink, not for the wine.

Fitger's Complex · Duluth · Hotel Restaurant / American
Lake Avenue Café shouldn't have a wine list this interesting — and that's exactly why you should pay attention to it. If you're passing through Duluth or staying at Fitger's, make a Wednesday reservation and work the half-price list.

Lincoln Park · Duluth · Thai
Thai by Thai isn't here to impress a wine crowd, and that's completely fine — at $7 a glass and $27 a bottle, this is a no-stress, just-drink-something spot where the food is the reason you came anyway. Order the Kung Fu Girl Riesling, get the Drunken Noodle, and stop overthinking it.

Downtown · Duluth · Indian
India Palace is a genuinely solid spot for Indian food in Duluth, but the wine program is collecting dust. Steep markups, a California-only list that ignores everything that actually works with spiced cuisine, and zero signs of anyone caring enough to change it — order a mango lassi and save the wine for somewhere else.
