Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Lake-Aire fits on a cocktail napkin — and honestly, that might be where they wrote it. Four options, no producers named, no regions beyond the broad assumption of California, and a flat $9 a glass or $40 a bottle across the board. This is a wine list that exists so the menu can say it has one.
We're looking at a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Merlot, a Chardonnay, and a White Zinfandel — the Mount Rushmore of uninspired restaurant wine programs. No producers are listed anywhere, which means you're ordering blind into whatever case landed cheapest at the distributor that month. There's no regional identity, no attempt at curation, and no evidence this list has changed in years. If you're hoping to find something from Burgundy, the Rhône, or even a halfway interesting California producer, keep hoping.
All four bottles are available by the glass at $9, which is the one thing approaching a silver lining here — at least you're not forced into a full bottle of mystery Merlot. The by-the-glass program is the entire program, so pour options and bottle options are exactly the same list. Rotation appears to be a foreign concept.
Chardonnay — $9/glass
If you're going to drink anything here, the Chardonnay is the safest bet — it's hard to wreck completely, and at $9 a glass you're not crying over it. Best case it's inoffensive. Worst case, it's a lesson.
Merlot
Nobody orders Merlot at a diner in 2024, which ironically makes it the most interesting choice on this list — it's the one wine here with enough softness to survive whatever temperature it's being stored at and still be drinkable alongside a burger.
White Zinfandel
The White Zinfandel is $40 a bottle with no producer attached to it. That's $40 for a bottle of sweet pink wine from an unknown source at a breakfast spot. Order coffee.
Cabernet Sauvignon + Burger
A generic California Cab and a diner burger are equally unpretentious — they belong together in the way that requires no thought, which is fitting because no thought went into either selection on this list.
❌ The Bottom Line
Lake-Aire is a local diner that does diner things well, and wine is clearly not one of those things. Order the blue plate special, drink the coffee, and save the wine for somewhere that actually cares about it.
Lake Como / The Ridge Hotel · Lake Geneva · American
Crafted Americana's wine program is resort-standard in the fullest sense: recognizable, priced for convenience, and unlikely to generate any complaints or any real excitement. If you're at The Ridge for the weekend and want a solid glass of Cab with your prime rib, you'll be fine — just don't come expecting a discovery.

Anthony's isn't a wine destination, and it doesn't pretend to be — but for a Wisconsin supper club on a Friday night, the list is honest, the prices are fair, and the Washington State focus gives it just enough personality to keep things interesting. Send your parents here and order the Syrah.

Opus is the rare fine dining wine program in the Midwest that earns the label without hedging — 346 bottles deep, French-focused, and staffed by someone who clearly knows what they're doing. The markups will sting, but for a special occasion in lake country, this is exactly where you want to be drinking.

1878 on the Lake is a solid resort restaurant doing exactly what resort restaurants do — safe selections, reliable producers, and a markup that subsidizes those lakefront views. We'd send a friend here for a nice night out on the water, but we'd tell them to skip the Reserve and order the Rosé.

Mars Resort is a great place to drink a cold glass of something while live music plays and the lake does all the heavy lifting — but don't come here expecting a wine program that cares as much as you do. Order the Bisol, enjoy the view, and save the serious bottle for somewhere else.
