RagingWine reviewed Ironhand Wine Barβs wine list and gave it The Wild Card β RagingWineβs Vibe-Check rating. How RagingWine reviews wine lists β
Wingman Metrics
The list is short and unapologetically house-forward β Ironhand Vineyard owns this room, literally. If you walked in expecting a sprawling Old World cellar, recalibrate. What you get instead is a focused, riverfront wine bar that bets everything on its own production, and mostly wins.
Thirty to sixty bottles sounds modest, but when the majority come from a single Indiana producer, the list reads more like a winery tasting room than a traditional wine bar β which is kind of the point. Ironhand leans into Midwest-friendly hybrids and cold-hardy varieties like Chambourcin alongside more familiar Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and they've got the range to show different expressions: oaked, unoaked, sparkling, aged. The 2013 Henri signals some genuine cellar ambition β not every local winery holds back a vintage for a decade. Guest producers are present but sparse, so if you need a Burgundy or a Barolo to get through the evening, this isn't your spot.
Ten to twenty pours by the glass is a generous ratio for a list this size, meaning you can actually explore the Ironhand range without committing to a bottle. The Cutlass Michigan Brut adds a regional sparkling option that keeps things interesting. Prices topping out around $16 keep the rounds affordable.
Ironhand Red Blend β $12
A Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot, and Chambourcin blend that punches above its price point β the Chambourcin adds a savory edge you won't find in most $12 pours, and it drinks well with half the charcuterie board.
Ironhand 2018 Zero Oak Chardonnay
Most people see 'Indiana Chardonnay' and mentally check out. Don't. The zero-oak treatment lets the fruit speak without the butter-bomb distraction, and it's a genuinely crisp pour that holds up better than expectations.
Ironhand 2016 Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is a brutal grape to grow in Indiana's climate, and a 2016 vintage showing its age on a list with limited storage notes is a risky order. Save your glass pour on something Ironhand actually has home-field advantage on.
Ironhand 2013 Henri + Charcuterie and cheese board
A decade-old house wine next to cured meats and aged cheese is the kind of pairing that doesn't need explaining β tannins have softened into something that flatters salt and fat without fighting it.
π² The Bottom Line
Ironhand is the rare wine bar built around a single vision rather than a buyer's curated greatest hits, and if you meet it on its own terms it genuinely delivers. Send your curious friend who thinks Indiana doesn't make real wine β this place will change the argument.
Mishawaka Β· South Bend Β· Casual Seafood and Grill
Bonefish Grill Mishawaka isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be β and at $6β$9 a glass with recognizable, well-stored bottles, it earns its place as a reliable option when you just want a decent pour with your salmon. Send your friends here knowing the wine won't disappoint, even if it won't surprise anyone either.

Tippecanoe Place is a beautiful room with a wine list that plays it very, very safe β fine for a anniversary dinner where the ambiance is doing most of the work, but don't come here expecting the wine to match the architecture. Order the Jordan, enjoy the mansion, and leave the exploration for another night.

Sunny Italy Cafe is a genuinely beloved South Bend institution β the food has the history and the heart. The wine list, unfortunately, is just along for the ride. Order the pasta, drink the Montepulciano, and don't expect much more than that.

South Bend Β· South Bend Β· Casino Dining / American Steakhouse
Four Winds Copper Rock has built a wine list that punches well above what any casino in this zip code needs to β 450 bottles is real, and the anchoring producers are crowd-pleasing for a reason. The markups are casino-predictable and the program lacks the staff depth and rotating energy to reach its potential, but if you're eating steak in South Bend tonight, this is where you want to be drinking.
