Oysters and Whispering Angel — not mad about it

The wine list at Hoochies is exactly what you'd expect from a laid-back oyster bar in Denton — short, familiar, and not trying to impress anyone. It does the job, and for a casual fish-fry spot where the real star is a fried catfish basket and a bucket of oysters, that's not the worst thing in the world. Just don't come in expecting discovery.
The list runs about 20-40 bottles, leaning on California, New Zealand, France, and the Pacific Northwest — all the greatest hits, none of the deep cuts. You'll recognize every label here: Meiomi, Kim Crawford, Whispering Angel. There's no real attempt to find interesting producers or push guests toward something they haven't seen at the grocery store. That said, the France and Pacific Northwest presence hints that someone, at some point, considered seafood-friendly options — crisp whites and minerally bottles that actually make sense with raw oysters.
Six to twelve pours by the glass is a reasonable spread for a spot this casual, and the options skew toward approachable crowd-pleasers that most guests will feel comfortable ordering. Rotation appears minimal — this is a set-it-and-forget-it program rather than a dynamic, ever-changing selection. If you're here for wine-bar energy, you're in the wrong place; if you just want a cold glass of something while shucking oysters, you're covered.
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc — Unknown
It's a grocery-store wine, yes, but Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc is genuinely built for shellfish — high acid, citrus-forward, clean finish. At a casual oyster house, leaning into a wine that actually works with the food is half the battle, and this one pulls its weight.
Pacific Northwest White
The Pacific Northwest section of the list — whatever's hiding in there — is worth asking about. That region produces some of the best value-driven white wines in the country, and a crisp Oregon Pinot Gris or Washington Riesling would be a legitimately exciting match for the fried shrimp po' boy.
Whispering Angel Rosé
Whispering Angel is a fine wine sold at a premium everywhere, and a casual Denton seafood joint isn't going to undercut the market on it. You're paying for the bottle's reputation and nothing else here — there's almost certainly a better value pour on this list.
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc + Fresh Oysters
Sauvignon Blanc's bright acidity and citrus zip cut right through the brine of a fresh oyster — it's essentially a squeeze of lemon in wine form. Kim Crawford isn't a fancy call, but it's a correct one.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Hoochies is an oyster bar first and a wine destination never, but the list is functional enough that you won't feel stranded. Order the catfish, grab a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, and save the wine deep-dive for another night.

Cheddar's wine program exists to check a box, not to serve you well. Order a cocktail or a beer — they've actually put thought into those — and save the wine for a restaurant that cares.

BJ's Denton is a beer hall that happens to stock wine, and the list makes that priority crystal clear. If you must drink wine here, come on a Tuesday — Half Off Wine Tuesday is the one thing this program does that actually earns a tip of the glass.

Saltgrass Denton is a solid place to eat a steak; it is not a place to drink wine. Order a Shiner, grab the J. Lohr if you need something in a glass, and save your wine curiosity for somewhere that shares it.

Texas Roadhouse Denton is not a wine destination — it's a rolls-and-steak destination, and that's completely fine. Order the cocktail, drink the beer, and save your wine enthusiasm for somewhere that returns the favor.

This wine program exists to check a box, not to enhance your meal — if you're at Chili's Denton for the wine, something has gone wrong. Stick to the margaritas, which is almost certainly what the restaurant intended all along.

Olive Garden Denton's wine list is what happens when a corporate committee designs a menu for the broadest possible audience and then never revisits it. Come for the breadsticks and the Zuppa Toscana — but if you care about what's in your glass, you already know this isn't your spot.
