The list at Hawthorne & Wood is compact — maybe 20-30 bottles — but it punches above its weight for a neighborhood spot in Chapel Hill. You're not going to get lost in a 200-page tome, but what's here feels intentional: someone actually picked these wines, not just grabbed the Sysco catalog. The $11–$20 glass range is honest for the market.
The list leans heavily French and Californian, with smart nods to Spain and a token Argentine Malbec for the crowd pleasers in the room. Loire Valley shows up twice — Muscadet and Beaujolais Villages — which tells you someone on the beverage side has opinions worth trusting. The Ameztoi Txakolina is a genuine outlier for the Triangle area, and La Rioja Alta's Viña Alberdi Reserva is a serious bottle at what's likely a fair price. The gaps are real though: no real Burgundy, no Rhône, and the Italian presence is just a single Vermentino.
Fifteen options by the glass is legitimately strong for a restaurant this size — that's almost the entire list poured open. The range covers sparkling (Château de la Durandière NV), white, rosé, and red without doubling up on safe bets. Rotation appears limited; this looks like a set-it list rather than something that changes weekly.
La Rioja Alta 'Viña Alberdi' Rioja Reserva — $14–$18/glass (est.)
Viña Alberdi is a proper Rioja Reserva from one of the region's most reliable producers — aged Tempranillo with real structure and depth. At the price point this list is running, getting this in your glass is a genuine deal. Most restaurants charge significantly more for far less pedigree.
Ameztoi 'Rubentis' Txakolina
Most diners are going to walk right past this and grab the Sauvignon Blanc. Don't. Rubentis is a salmon-pink Txakolina from the Basque Country with a slight spritz, bright acidity, and a salinity that makes it one of the most food-friendly pours on the list. It's genuinely unusual for Chapel Hill and exactly the kind of thing you want to discover at a neighborhood restaurant.
Michael Pozzan 'Annabella' Cabernet Sauvignon
Annabella Cab is perfectly drinkable but it's a bulk-production California Cabernet that you can find at your grocery store for $15. It's the default corporate pick on a list that otherwise shows some ambition — and at restaurant markup, there's just no reason to order it when Viña Alberdi is sitting right there.
Jo Landron 'La Louvetrie' Muscadet + Roasted Chicken
Muscadet on lees has that savory, almost umami-driven quality that cuts through roasted chicken fat without fighting the dish. La Louvetrie specifically has enough body to hold up to the crispy skin while the bright acidity keeps every bite clean. It's a classic combo that most people would never order — their loss.

Hawthorne & Wood isn't trying to be a wine destination, but it's doing more than most comparable spots in the area — the list is curated, the glass selection is generous, and a few real gems are hiding in plain sight.
