You're in a strip mall off Pioneer Trail in Truckee, and then you open the wine list and there's Sassicaia and Bruno Giacosa staring back at you. It's a genuine double-take moment. This is not the list you expect from a cozy mountain neighborhood spot, and that's entirely the point.
Great Gold runs 62 labels with a clear editorial stance: Italy, done seriously. Piedmont anchors the list with Barolo from Curto Marco and Giacosa Fratelli, a Timorasso from La Spinetta, and Elvio Tintero's Barbaresco Nebbiolo. Tuscany brings the firepower — Sassicaia in two vintages including a magnum, plus Col d'Orcia's Brunello di Montalcino. The Ferrari Chardonnay 'Perle' from Trentino and Roberto Mazzi's Amarone round out a list that's genuinely curated rather than assembled. The gaps are real — California gets minimal representation, and there's no deep dive into natural or biodynamic producers — but the intentionality here is hard to argue with.
By-the-glass specifics weren't available at time of review, which is a frustration given how strong the bottle list reads. If the pours mirror the bottle selection even partially, this could be a by-the-glass program worth writing home about — but we couldn't confirm that. Check in with your server before committing.
Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino Tuscany 2021 — $115
Brunello at $115 in a ski town restaurant is genuinely reasonable. Col d'Orcia is a reliable, estate-driven producer and 2021 is a strong Montalcino vintage. You'd pay close to this at a serious wine bar in a major city.
La Spinetta Timorasso 'Derthona' Piedmont 2024
Timorasso is one of Italy's great white wine redemption stories — a nearly extinct Piedmontese grape that La Spinetta helped rescue and champion. Most tables at Great Gold are going to order red and ignore this entirely. That's their loss. It's a white wine with the structure and seriousness to hold its own next to anything on the food menu.
Tenuta San Guido Cabernet/Merlot 'Guidalberto' Tuscany 2023
At $150, Guidalberto is doing a lot of heavy lifting on name recognition alone. It's the second wine from the Sassicaia estate and a fine bottle in its own right — but at that price point in a restaurant context, you're paying a significant premium for the Tenuta San Guido halo. The Brunello at $115 is a far better use of your money.
Elvio Tintero Nebbiolo Barbaresco Piemonte 2022 + Rigatoni Vodka
Tintero makes a lighter, more approachable style of Barbaresco that still carries Nebbiolo's characteristic grip and cherry fruit. That structure cuts right through the cream and tomato richness of the vodka sauce without overwhelming it — and the earthiness in the wine echoes the savory depth of the dish.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Great Gold is punching well above its weight class for a Truckee neighborhood restaurant — the Italian wine selection is genuinely impressive and the best bottles are priced fairly enough to actually order. Just know going in that you're working with a focused, somewhat expensive list, and that the Guidalberto isn't the bargain it looks like.

Los Arcos isn't destination wine drinking, but it's doing more than most Mexican spots at altitude bother to do. If you're coming off the mountain and want something decent in the glass without a resort markup nightmare, it delivers.

Rubicon isn't trying to be a wine destination, and it doesn't pretend to be one — it's a family-friendly pizza spot in a ski village with a list that keeps the table happy without breaking the experience. Order the Chianti, eat the pizza, and save the deep-dive wine conversation for somewhere with a cellar.

Zander's is the kind of place that rewards curious drinkers who want something local and unpretentious without getting talked down to. If you're passing through Truckee and want a real wine experience instead of a ski resort markup, this is your stop.

Sunnyside is a casual lodge restaurant wearing a serious wine list under its flannel — the markup is steep and it won't win any awards for staff expertise, but the producer lineup is legitimately impressive for where you're sitting. If you're already at the lake, this is absolutely worth ordering a real bottle.

The Bistro's wine list is exactly what you'd expect from a luxury ski resort: well-stored, competently poured, and priced for people who are already spending a lot on lodging. If you came here for wine discovery, wrong mountain — but if you want a solid glass of California Cab next to a fire with a view of the Sierra Nevada, you'll be just fine.

The Grille has a wine program that would hold its own in a proper city restaurant, which makes it a legitimate reason to seek out this lodge beyond just the mountain access.
