Walking into Good Oak on Congress Street, you don't immediately clock it as a wine destination — and that's kind of the point. It's a relaxed downtown bar that doesn't announce itself with chalkboard manifesto menus or overly curated playlists, but the drink list has a genuine point of view. The focus leans toward Italy and Portugal, which tells you someone here is paying attention.
Good Oak isn't trying to be a 200-bottle wine bar, and it doesn't need to be. The list skews Old World with a clear affection for Italian and Portuguese bottles — regions that reward the curious without demanding they already know what Vinho Verde is. It's a tight, deliberate selection rather than a sprawling one, which actually makes ordering easier and signals that whoever built this list made real choices instead of just filling slots. Don't expect a cellar's worth of options, but do expect the bottles that are here to actually make sense.
The by-the-glass program reflects the same restrained but intentional energy as the full list — a handful of options rather than a rotating wall of twenty. Wine flights are a menu item, which is a smart move for a bar that wants guests to explore without committing to a full bottle. La Esquina is the kind of place Tucson needs more of: a corner bar that actually thought about its wine list rather than just bolting one on. The Iberian and Mediterranean focus fits the food, the vibe earns its 'romantic neighborhood spot' reputation, and it lands squarely in Wild Card territory — not because the list is massive, but because finding this level of intentionality in a casual Tucson bar is genuinely unexpected. Go in without a full preview of the list and let whoever's behind the bar point you somewhere interesting.
