Wingman Metrics
Walking into the Wine Room at Galaxy feels like the restaurant is actually trying — and not just hanging a few bottles on the wall for decoration. The list skews international with real range, from German Riesling to Piedmontese Chardonnay to an Ohio sparkling Albariño that makes you do a double take. It's the kind of list that signals someone here cares about wine, even if the markups occasionally remind you this is still a business.
The list covers serious ground: Rias Baixas Albariño, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Mendoza Malbec, Napa reds, and a Viberti Giovanni Piedmont DOC Chardonnay that most Ohio restaurants wouldn't dream of stocking. The California presence is strong — Orin Swift Abstract and the Taken Napa Red anchor the premium end — but the international picks are where Galaxy actually shows some range. There's a genuine effort to include both approachable crowd-pleasers and more adventurous choices. The one gap: no Burgundy, no Rhône, no Italian reds to speak of, which leaves the old-world depth feeling half-finished.
Six by-the-glass options in the $11–$15 range is a thin pour for a restaurant billing itself as a wine destination. You're not going to graze your way through the list by the glass — this is a bottle-first program. Quality of what's available appears solid, but the rotation and selection details aren't published, so you're walking in a little blind.
La Cana Albariño 2022 Rias Baixas DO — $48
At the low end of the bottle range, La Cana is one of the most reliable Albariños on the market — bright, saline, and genuinely food-friendly. It's the smartest spend on this list.
Viberti Giovanni Piedmont DOC Chardonnay 2022
A Piedmontese Chardonnay from a serious producer almost nobody in Ohio is pouring. It's not Burgundy, but it's grown in limestone-rich soils in the shadow of Barolo country and drinks with real texture and restraint. Most tables will walk right past it — their loss.
Taken Napa Valley Red 2019
At $74, this is the top of the bottle range and a brand that leans heavily on marketing cachet. Napa red blends at this price point need to justify themselves, and without retail context, this one looks like it's there to anchor the high end of the menu rather than offer real value.
Mendel Malbec 2020 Mendoza + Steak
Mendel is one of Mendoza's most serious producers, and their Malbec has the structure and dark fruit to hold up against a proper cut of beef without going over the top. It's the no-brainer call at a steakhouse with a wine list.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Galaxy's Wine Room is the best wine program in the Akron orbit, and it's not particularly close — but the steep markups and thin by-the-glass selection hold it back from true destination status. Come with a budget, order a bottle, and skip the sticker shock on the Napa end of the list.
Montrose / Fairlawn · Akron · Seafood
Come for the seafood — the Shrimp & Grits and Crab Cake have genuine fans — but come on a Tuesday when the bottles are half off, because that's the only time the wine program makes financial sense. Any other night, order a cocktail.

East Akron · Akron · Japanese / Hibachi
Hibachi Japan's wine list isn't going to make anyone's bucket list, but it's priced fairly, covers the basics, and won't embarrass you on date night. Order the Riesling or Pinot Gris, enjoy the show, and don't overthink it.

Montrose / Fairlawn · Akron · Seafood
Bonefish Grill Fairlawn won't give you a wine moment worth texting about, but it won't rip you off either — and in the chain restaurant landscape, that clears the bar. Show up during Social Hour, grab a Kim Crawford, and focus on the fish.

Montrose / Fairlawn · Akron · Family American
Yours Truly is a solid diner doing diner things — the wine list is an afterthought, and that's fine, because you're probably here for the eggs anyway. Order the Prosecco or a Riesling, skip the red blends, and put your energy into the food.

Fairlawn / Montrose · Akron · Wine Bar & Retail Shop
Regency is the kind of wine shop Akron deserves more of — small, specific, and clearly curated by someone with a point of view. It's not a destination list, but if you're in Fairlawn and want a proper glass of white Burgundy or a bottle of Ripasso to take home, this is exactly where you go.
