Great Grouper, Forgettable Wine List

The wine list at Frenchy's Saltwater Cafe is basically an afterthought — a handful of generic house pours tucked behind a menu that's clearly all about the grouper sandwich. Nobody's coming here for the Burgundy selection, and the list knows it.
We're talking eight to twelve options at most, anchored almost entirely by unnamed house wines. The one standout with any regional identity is a Barossa Cabernet — a single Australian entry that hints at something more ambitious before the list immediately gives up. There are no whites worth noting, no rosé, no sparkling, and nothing that suggests anyone sat down and thought carefully about what wines might actually complement a plate of stone crab or a seafood basket. This is a list built for volume and simplicity, not curiosity.
Four to six pours by the glass, priced at $6–$8, which keeps things accessible if not exactly exciting. The House Cabernet and House Merlot are your workhorses here — fine for the price but don't ask too many questions about where they came from. The Barossa Cabernet is the only glass that gives you something to talk about.
Barossa Cabernet — $8
At $8 a glass on a retail bottle that runs around $12, the markup is remarkably restrained. For a beachside casual spot, that's as honest as it gets — and a Barossa Cab actually has enough fruit and body to hold up against bold seafood flavors.
Barossa Cabernet
Most people at a Florida beach seafood joint reach for a beer without a second thought, which means this Australian Cab goes largely ignored. It's the only wine on the list with any actual regional character, and at $8 it's worth a shot — especially if you're ordering something richer off the menu.
House Merlot
House Merlot at a casual beach cafe is rarely anyone's proudest moment, and nothing in the research data suggests this one breaks the mold. Save the $7, get another round of something cold on draft.
Barossa Cabernet + Stone Crab
Counterintuitive, sure — but the briny sweetness of stone crab and the jammy, full-fruited character of a Barossa Cab create a surprisingly fun contrast. It's not a textbook match, but it's more interesting than anything else on the list allows.
❌ The Bottom Line
Frenchy's is a great place to eat grouper in flip-flops — the wine list is just not the reason you're there, and that's fine as long as you go in knowing it. Order the Barossa Cab if you want something with a pulse, then redirect your attention to the food.
Westshore · Clearwater · Fine-dining steakhouse
The Capital Grille is a reliable machine — the wine program is competent, well-staffed, and properly executed, but the markups are steep and the list plays it extremely safe. Send a friend here for a business dinner, but tell them to order Jordan before anyone at the table reaches for the Opus One.

Fleming's is a reliable machine — excellent execution, real wine depth by-the-glass, staff that knows the list, and no surprises in a bad way. Just don't expect discovery; expect comfort, and budget accordingly for markup.

Guppy's won't win any awards for adventurous curation, but the list is fairly priced, thoughtfully stocked for a seafood crowd, and broad enough that everyone at the table finds something. Send a friend here for the grouper and tell them to drink the Cloudy Bay.

E&E Stakeout Grill is a perfectly decent neighborhood steakhouse wine list that asks too much on most nights — but Wine Wednesday flips the math entirely and makes this one of the better value plays in the Clearwater area. Come on a Wednesday, order the Chianti Classico, and you'll have zero complaints.

Clearwater Beach · Clearwater · Mediterranean and Mexican-inspired wine bar and bistro
This is the best wine program you're likely to find within walking distance of Clearwater Beach, and that's not faint praise — it's a genuine destination for the wine-curious crowd that usually has to settle for whatever's on draft. Wednesday's half-price U.S. bottle deal seals it: show up, order spaghetti, drink better than you planned.

Carrabba's Clearwater is a solid, honest chain wine program — fair prices, recognizable producers, nothing offensive. Send a friend here if they want Italian comfort food and an easy bottle of Chianti; don't send them if they're hoping to find something worth talking about.
