Wingman Metrics
Tucked inside a Danish-style inn on Solvang's main drag, First & Oak is the last place you'd expect a genuinely serious wine program — and that's exactly what makes it worth your attention. The list reads like a love letter to Santa Barbara County, with a tight but deliberate selection that trusts the region's terroir to do the talking. You're not getting a 500-bottle Napa ego list here; you're getting something smarter.
The focus lands squarely on Santa Barbara County's top appellations — Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Maria Valley, and Ballard Canyon — with heavy hitters like Sandhi, Brewer-Clifton, Stolpman, and Presqu'ile anchoring the local section. It's the kind of curation that shows someone actually thought about this, not just copy-pasted a distributor sheet. Beyond California, there's a nod to Burgundy and the Northern Rhône, which makes sense given how well those regions map onto what Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay and Ballard Canyon Syrah are trying to do. The gaps are real — don't come looking for Italian depth or anything south of France — but within its lane, this list is sharp.
Glass pours skew toward the local-first philosophy, with options that rotate seasonally rather than sitting stale for months. You're likely looking at somewhere between 8 and 12 pours on any given night, and the sommelier on staff means whoever's pouring actually knows what's in the glass. This is a by-the-glass program built for the tasting menu format — each pour feels like it was chosen with food in mind, not just volume.
Sandhi Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills — $80
Sandhi is Rajat Parr's project and punches well above its price class — Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay from a producer this focused should cost you a lot more in a restaurant setting. At this price, it's one of the smarter buys on the list.
Stolpman Vineyards Syrah Ballard Canyon
Most tables at a place like this default to Pinot Noir and never look back. That's a mistake. Stolpman's Ballard Canyon Syrah is the kind of wine that makes you rethink the whole Northern Rhône vs. California debate — savory, structured, and completely unexpected from a spot that looks like a Danish fairy tale on the outside.
Presqu'ile Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley
Presqu'ile makes solid wine and we respect the estate, but the Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir tends to be the most broadly distributed and widely available bottle on this list — you've probably seen it at a Whole Foods near you. With Brewer-Clifton on the same list, this one doesn't justify the restaurant markup.
Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills + Seasonal farm-to-table small plates featuring Central Coast produce
Brewer-Clifton's Sta. Rita Hills Pinot has the acid and structure to cut through rich, earthy preparations without steamrolling the nuance of whatever the kitchen is pulling from local farms that week. It's a wine that tastes like where you are, which is exactly what you want in a place like this.
The Bottom Line
First & Oak is the rare restaurant where the wine program actually matches the ambition of the kitchen — local, focused, and quietly excellent. If you're passing through wine country and want a proper bottle with a proper meal, this is your stop.
Alisal Ranch / Golf Course · Solvang · Casual American Grill
The Grill at the Ranch Course isn't a wine destination, but it's a smart, locally-honest list that respects its surroundings more than most golf course restaurants bother to. If you're already at Alisal Ranch, lean into the Santa Ynez producers and you'll drink well.

Buellton · Solvang · Californian farm-to-table, wood-fired, casual
Industrial Eats shouldn't have a wine list this good, and that's exactly why we like it. If you're already making the drive through the Santa Ynez Valley, this is the casual stop that earns a detour.

Santa Ynez · Solvang · Italian Trattoria
Trattoria Grappolo isn't trying to be a destination wine bar, and it doesn't need to be — it's a warm, well-run trattoria with a list that respects its address and feeds the food well. If you're in the Santa Ynez Valley and want local wines with good pasta, this is exactly the right call.

Los Alamos · Solvang · Wood-fired flatbreads and seasonal Californian cuisine
Full of Life Flatbread is the best argument for pulling off the freeway in Los Alamos — the food and the wine list are both punching way above what a casual flatbread spot has any business delivering. If you're driving through wine country and skipping this because it doesn't look like a tasting room, that's on you.

Los Alamos · Solvang · Seasonal Californian farm-to-table
Pico is the rare restaurant where the wine program is as compelling as the drive to get there. If you're making the trip to Los Alamos, the list alone is reason enough to book a table and stay awhile.

Los Alamos · Solvang · French Bistro
Bell's is the rare small-town restaurant where the wine list is as considered as the food, and the two actually talk to each other. If you're anywhere near Los Alamos, this is a destination — not a detour.
