California Classics, Harbor Views, Wednesday Wins

The list arrives and it reads like a greatest hits of California wine — Caymus, Silver Oak, Opus One, Rombauer. If you've eaten at any upscale steakhouse or seafood house in the last decade, you've seen this list before. That's not a crime, but it's not exactly inspiring either.
Three hundred to four hundred bottles and almost all of them fly the California flag — which is fine when the producers are legit, and these are. Kistler Chardonnay, Flowers Pinot Noir, Stag's Leap Artemis, Far Niente — there's real quality here, just zero surprise. Old World fans will find thin pickings, and anything outside Napa and Sonoma feels like an afterthought. Wine Spectator has recognized this list since 2016, and you can see why — it's consistent, well-curated within its lane, and the California depth is genuine.
Twenty to thirty options by the glass is a strong number for a seafood spot, and the range covers the expected white-to-red spectrum without gaps. Cakebread and Rombauer Chardonnay anchor the white side; expect to spend $28–$32 a glass for the crowd favorites. The rotation feels more set-it-and-forget-it than actively managed, but the quality floor is high.
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 — $85/bottle
At $85, the Artemis is the sharpest bottle on the list relative to what you're getting — a Napa Cab with actual pedigree and restraint. Most everything around it at this price point is either lesser quality or worse value.
Flowers Vineyard Pinot Noir
Everyone at this table is ordering Chardonnay or Cab. The Flowers Pinot from Sonoma Coast is the move — cooler-climate, savory, and genuinely interesting next to the seafood-heavy menu. It gets ignored because it's not a status pour.
Opus One 2019
At $595 a bottle, you're paying full trophy-wine markup at a waterfront restaurant where the kitchen's main event is Chilean Sea Bass. Opus One deserves a different occasion — and a better price.
Far Niente Chardonnay Napa Valley + Chilean Sea Bass
Far Niente's Chardonnay has the weight and richness to stand up to the buttery, meaty sea bass without steamrolling it. It's the most natural match on the list for the restaurant's signature dish.
Wednesday — Half-price wine night on Wednesdays — the single best reason to time your visit. Transforms the steep markup into a genuinely good deal.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Eddie V's is exactly what it is — a polished, dependable California-centric list in a beautiful waterfront room. Show up on a Wednesday for the half-price bottle deal and you'll leave very happy.
Rancho Santa Fe · San Diego · French-Californian Fine Dining
Mille Fleurs is the real thing — a serious cellar, a knowledgeable sommelier, and a room that earns the prices it charges. The markup is steep, but you're not paying for a wine list; you're paying for the whole production, and that production is very good.

Carlsbad Village · San Diego · Modern French
Jeune et Jolie is the best wine list in North San Diego County and it's not particularly close. Yes, the markups reflect the fine dining ambition, but the depth, the staff knowledge, and the sheer thoughtfulness of the French selection make this worth the drive from anywhere in the region.

Luce isn't a wine bar, but it's a neighborhood spot that respects wine enough to make it worth ordering — and that alone puts it ahead of most places in its category. Fair prices, a focused list, and enough variety to find something you'll actually enjoy.

The Sole Proprietor is a reliable, crowd-pleasing list that does exactly what a classic seafood institution should — it just won't thrill anyone looking for adventure or a fair deal on the big names. Order the oysters, pick the DuMol, and leave the Opus One for someone else's expense account.
