First Impression
The wine list at Duval's reads like a greatest hits album from every resort town steakhouse: Caymus, Rombauer, Whispering Angel, Veuve. It's safe, it's expensive, and it's exactly what the downtown Sarasota crowd wants when they're dropping serious money on stone crab. The 100+ bottle list isn't breaking new ground, but it's clearly maintained by people who know how to sell wine to tourists and locals alike.
Selection Deep Dive
The list leans heavily into California cult favorites and recognizable European labels that won't scare anyone off. You'll find plenty of Napa Cabernet, buttery Chardonnays, and Provence rosé for patio sipping. Italian selections round out the middle of the list with reliable Tuscan reds and Pinot Grigio. There's even Opus One Overture for the table that wants to flex. What's missing: anything adventurous, natural, or under $40 that isn't mass-produced. This is a list built for comfort, not exploration.
By the Glass
At least five by-the-glass options rotate through, priced between $9.50 and $12, which is reasonable for the location but nothing groundbreaking. The real move is the happy hour $6 house wines from 3-6pm and again after 9pm at the bar and patio. That's when the value equation actually works in your favor. Otherwise, you're paying tourist-town markups for wines you can find at Total Wine for half the price.
Happy Hour House White — $6
At half the regular pour price during two daily windows, this is the only time Duval's pricing makes sense. Pair it with oysters at the bar and you're winning.
Soave Classico
If they have a Northern Italian white section, look for a Soave. It's citrusy, saline, and built for seafood—far more interesting than the Rombauer everyone orders, and probably half the price.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Marked up to oblivion and completely wrong for a seafood-forward menu. Save your $150+ and order something that actually makes sense with what you're eating.
Whispering Angel Rosé + Crab cake
The Provence rosé's mineral backbone and red fruit cut through the richness of the crab cake without overpowering the delicate seafood. It's a patio classic for good reason.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Duval's isn't here to challenge your palate—it's here to give you a nice bottle of wine with your grouper. If you know what you're doing, hit happy hour and stick to whites. Otherwise, you're paying a premium for safety.
