Wingman Metrics
Walk into the ground floor of a senior living community at ASU and the last thing you expect is an Award of Excellence-caliber wine list β yet here we are. The room is casual, the vibe is open-to-everyone, and the list punches well above what the setting telegraphs. This is the definition of a Wild Card.
The 80-120 bottle list leans hard into California and Arizona, which turns out to be a smart, coherent strategy rather than a cop-out. You get heavy hitters like Jordan Cab from Alexander Valley and Duckhorn Merlot out of Napa sitting alongside genuinely interesting Arizona producers β Arizona Stronghold Vineyards and Merkin Vineyards (Maynard James Keenan's Caduceus project) give the list real regional credibility. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Chardonnay covers the California white side competently, and Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling sneaks in as a crowd-pleaser that actually deserves its spot. The list won't satisfy a Burgundy obsessive, but for what it's doing β California classics plus an honest Arizona showcase β it holds together well.
With 10-16 options by the glass ranging from $10-$18, the program is genuinely functional rather than an afterthought. That range is wide enough to catch most dinner orders without forcing anyone into a bottle. We'd love to see more Arizona producers represented in the glass pours specifically, given how strong the local angle is on the bottle list.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling β $35
At the low end of the bottle range, this is the easy yes β a reliably food-friendly Riesling that works with half the menu and rarely disappoints at this price point.
Merkin Vineyards (Caduceus Cellars)
Most people scrolling this list will gravitate toward the Napa names, but Merkin is doing genuinely interesting work with Arizona terroir. Skip the familiar and take the local gamble β it's worth it.
Duckhorn Merlot (Napa Valley)
Duckhorn is a fine wine, but it's also widely available retail and tends to carry full restaurant markup here. The Arizona bottles tell a more interesting story for less money.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley) + Lasagna
Jordan Cab is built for exactly this β rich, meaty, with enough structure to cut through the layers of pasta and sauce without overwhelming the table. Classic match, no overthinking required.
π² The Bottom Line
A senior living community in Tempe earning a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and actually backing it up with California classics and legit Arizona producers is the kind of surprise we live for. If you're near ASU and sleeping on this list, wake up.
South Tempe Β· Tempe Β· American / Neighborhood Bistro
The Hudson is a fine place to eat a burger and drink a beer, but the wine list is on autopilot β familiar labels, steep markups outside of Wednesday's deal, and no evidence that anyone on staff is losing sleep over it. Send a friend here for the food, tell them to drink a cocktail.

Eureka! Tempe is a craft beer bar first, a burger spot second, and a wine destination never. Order a local draft, enjoy your Truffle Cheese Fries, and save the wine for a place that's actually trying.

Blanco is a tequila bar that serves wine as a courtesy, and the list reflects exactly that level of commitment. Come for the cocktails and the Short Rib Machaca Enchiladas β if you want wine, order the bottle with the lowest markup and don't overthink it.

Top of the Rock is a safe, predictable wine list dressed up in a genuinely spectacular setting β you're paying a resort premium for Napa's greatest hits, and the view is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Send a friend here for the scenery and the steak, but tell them to pick their bottle carefully.

Top of the Rock is a perfectly acceptable place to drink wine if the sunset and the occasion are doing the work β just don't expect the list to surprise you or the prices to be anything but hotel-steep. Order the Brunello or the Penner-Ash, enjoy the view, and let it be what it is.

Filthy Animal is the last place you'd expect to find a real wine list, which is precisely what makes it a Wild Card β the selection punches above the bar's party-school energy, and if you know what to order, you can drink well while everyone else is doing kamikazes. Just don't come here for the value; come for the vibe and the pleasant surprise.

This is a wine list that exists purely because restaurants are expected to have one. Don't come to Applebee's for wine β but if you're already here and you need a glass, the Mondavi Cab won't embarrass you.

You're not coming to Hy-Vee Market Grille for a wine revelation β but on a Wednesday, with half-price pours and half-price sushi, it's one of the better casual deals in town. Manage expectations, bring cash, and embrace the absurdity.

This is a wine list for people who need wine with dinner and aren't interested in making it a thing β and it delivers exactly that without embarrassing anyone.
