Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Desert Rose reads like someone grabbed whatever was on sale at Total Wine and called it a program. Eight bottles, a mini sparkling, and zero sense of curation — this is a pizza-and-beer spot that happens to stock wine as an afterthought. The patio is great; the wine list is not.
The list leans almost entirely on California and leans hard on Grayson Cellars, which shows up three times across Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. That's not a wine program, that's a distributor relationship. There's a single nod to New Zealand with the Twin Islands Sauvignon Blanc, and a token Italian Moscato from Seven Daughters for the sweet-tooth crowd. The Pennywise Red Blend rounds things out in name and in spirit — this list is not trying to impress anyone.
No by-the-glass breakdown is publicly listed, so we're working with what's on the bottle menu — and it's a short list either way. The Kenwood Cuvée Brut comes in a 187ml single-serve, which is the most telling detail here: this is a list built for convenience, not conversation. Don't expect a server to walk you through pours with any confidence.
Twin Islands Sauvignon Blanc 2014 — null
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is a reliable crowd-pleaser that holds its own against wood-fired pizza acidity. Twin Islands is a competent producer from Marlborough, and it's the one bottle on this list that feels intentional. Pricing unknown, but it's your best shot at something refreshing.
Kenwood Pinot Noir, Sonoma, California
Kenwood is a workhorse Sonoma producer that rarely gets any love because it's not flashy, but their Pinot Noir is a legitimate food wine. Against wood-fired crust and earthy toppings, it punches above its price point and above its placement on a list like this.
Pennywise Red Blend, California
The name is truth in advertising. Pennywise is a budget-tier California blend that trades on value at retail — but at gastropub markups, you're paying a premium for something that retails for around eight dollars a bottle. Order a beer instead.
Twin Islands Sauvignon Blanc 2014 + Wood-Fired Pizza
The bright citrus and herbaceous cut of a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc slices right through the char and fat of a wood-fired pie. It's not a sophisticated pairing, but on a hot Arizona patio, it's exactly what you want in your hand.
❌ The Bottom Line
Desert Rose is a genuinely fun neighborhood spot with a patio worth sitting on — just don't come here for the wine list. Order a craft beer or a cocktail, enjoy the pizza, and save your wine curiosity for somewhere that earned it.
Westgate Entertainment District · Glendale · American gastropub / bar & grill
Bar Louie Westgate is a perfectly fine place to drink beer and watch a game — the wine list is an afterthought and everyone involved seems to know it. If wine is your thing, order a cocktail and come back to the wine conversation at a different restaurant.

Kabuki Westgate is a fun spot for sushi and cocktails on a Cardinals game night — just don't come for the wine list. Order a sake flight instead and save yourself the markup.

Turquoise Wine Bar is the kind of place that earns its Wild Card badge honestly — not by being weird for weird's sake, but by curating a genuinely curious list in a zip code that didn't ask for one. Send your wine-curious friends here; they'll leave with something new to talk about.

Maggiano's Westgate is perfectly fine for a glass of wine with dinner — just don't come expecting the list to match the ambition of the kitchen. If wine is actually important to your night, this probably isn't your destination.

Bonefish Grill Glendale isn't a wine destination, but it's a perfectly functional place to have a glass with dinner without feeling ripped off. Send your friends here for the Bang Bang Shrimp — just don't tell them to geek out on the list.

Skip the wine list on any day that isn't Wednesday — the markups are too steep for what's in the glass. But Half Off Wine Wednesday genuinely changes the math, and a $20 bottle of Prosecco rosé with a bowl of meatballs is hard to argue with.
