Wingman Metrics
The list at Covey reads exactly like the room looks — clean, approachable, designed to offend no one. It's a hotel wine program that actually bothered to show up, which in Gainesville puts it ahead of more places than you'd expect. Nothing here is going to make you text a friend at midnight, but you're not getting hosed either.
Thirty to fifty labels covering California, Oregon, France, and New Zealand — the standard-issue continental spread without much soul, but executed competently. The California contingent does the heavy lifting with names like Rodney Strong, Imagery, and Meiomi holding down the familiar end of the shelf. There's no real deep cut here, no grower Champagne or Willamette Valley single-vineyard outlier that signals someone cares above the call of duty. What you get is a list built for the hotel guest who wants something recognizable and the date-night crowd who doesn't want to spend thirty minutes deciding.
Eight to twelve pours covering the bases — sparkling, white, red — at $11 to $20 a glass, which is genuinely reasonable for a hotel restaurant in 2024. The rotation doesn't appear to change much, so don't expect to find something new on your third visit. La Marca Prosecco anchors the sparkling slot, which is fine but predictable.
Rodney Strong Estate Chardonnay Sonoma County 2021 — $12
At $12 a glass for a Rodney Strong Chardonnay that retails around $18, the markup is modest by any standard. It's a clean, well-made Sonoma Chard — not trying to be Kistler, but it doesn't need to be at this price.
Tribunal Red Blend Sonoma County 2020
Most tables at Covey are ordering the Meiomi or the Cab and ignoring this one. The Tribunal Red Blend from Sonoma punches with more complexity than the name suggests, and at $13 a glass it's the most interesting pour on the list that nobody's asking about.
Meiomi Pinot Noir California 2021
At $12 a glass for a wine you can grab at Total Wine for $20, the markup is the highest on the list at nearly 67% — and Meiomi is grocery-store Pinot that leans sweet and soft. There are better uses of your $12 here.
Rodney Strong Estate Chardonnay Sonoma County 2021 + Shrimp & Grits
The creamy richness of shrimp and grits wants a white with enough body to hold its own without going full-oaky. Rodney Strong's Chardonnay has the fruit weight and restrained oak to match the dish without steamrolling it.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Covey isn't a wine destination, but it's a decent place to drink a glass of something recognizable at a price that won't wreck your evening. If you're already there for dinner, lean into the Chardonnay or the Tribunal Red and skip the Meiomi.

Superette is the kind of place that shouldn't exist in a mid-sized Florida college town, and yet here it is — a genuinely thoughtful natural wine program with fair pricing and a vibe that makes you want to stay longer than you planned. Send your friends, but tell them to skip the Pinot.

One Love Café is never going to be your destination for wine, but the Wednesday half-price bottle deal at a laid-back outdoor café makes it a genuinely good call when you want something easygoing and inexpensive. Come for the vibe, stay for the deal — just don't expect anyone to talk you through the list.

Olive Garden's wine program exists to check a box, not elevate a meal — steep markups on grocery-store bottles with zero curation or staff expertise. Stick to the breadsticks, or bring your own bottle if corkage is an option.

Reserve is the rare wine program in a mid-sized American city that can genuinely compete with major metro restaurant lists — deep cellar, knowledgeable staff, and more by-the-glass options than most places have bottles. Markups trend steep at the top end, but the sheer scope of what's available makes it worth every visit.

Ivory & Oak is a reliable wine stop in a city that isn't exactly crawling with serious lists — the room is great, the pours are familiar, and the markup is the main thing holding it back from something better. Go for the steak, order the Merlot, and don't expect to be challenged.

Yard House Chesapeake is exactly what it is: a polished chain bar with a wine list built for broad appeal, not wine nerds. Show up on a Monday, grab a half-price bottle of Meiomi or La Crema, and enjoy the vibe without overthinking it.
