Walking into Valette, the wine list feels exactly like the room: warm, confident, deeply rooted in the surrounding county. At 250–300 labels, it's substantial without being exhausting, and the California-first focus reads less like a limitation and more like a deliberate love letter to the vineyards sitting just outside the door. If you drove up from the city hoping to explore Burgundy, you're in the wrong place — and honestly, that's fine.
The list leans hard into Sonoma County's greatest hits: Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, and Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon make up the backbone, with local Healdsburg small-production labels scattered throughout to reward the curious. Depth in the region is real — this isn't just a curated greatest-hits compilation, there's genuine discovery available if you look past the familiar names. That said, if you came hoping for Old World depth or anything south of the Italian border, manage your expectations. The list knows what it is and plays to its strengths, which in wine country is exactly the right call.
Fifteen to twenty by-the-glass options is generous for a restaurant this size, covering the expected Sonoma terrain at $14–$22 a pour. The range is solid enough that a table of two can work through a meal without ever feeling like they're settling. We'd love to see more rotation or a dedicated small-production pour that changes weekly, but what's here is well-chosen and consistent.
Ridge Three Valleys Sonoma County Red — $75
Yes, $75 is about double what you'd pay at retail, but Ridge Three Valleys is one of California's most honest, food-friendly reds — and at this price point relative to other bottles on the list, it punches well above its placement. Order it with the charcuterie and don't look back.
Turley Old Vines Zinfandel California
Turley gets overlooked at the table because people assume Zin means jammy and one-dimensional. Old Vines is neither — it's structured, earthy, and built for a meal rather than a tasting. At $88 it's not a steal, but it's the kind of bottle that turns a dinner into a conversation.
Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
At $165 for a bottle you can find at retail for $80, you're paying a significant premium for a wine that's widely distributed and rarely surprising. With all the local Sonoma Cabernet options on a list this deep, there's almost no reason to reach for the Napa benchmark at that markup.
Ramey Chardonnay Sonoma Coast + Day Boat Scallops en Croute
Ramey's Sonoma Coast Chardonnay has the tension and structure to cut through that butter-rich puff pastry without steamrolling the scallop. It's not a flabby, tropical Chard — it's restrained and mineral-driven, which is exactly what a dish this rich needs to stay balanced across the whole plate.
The Bottom Line
Valette is the wine country restaurant experience done right — deeply local, properly staffed, and serious about what's in the glass, even if the markups ask you to pay for the zip code. Send your friends here if they're already in Healdsburg; just tell them to skip the Phelps.
