Spanish Soul on the Gulf Coast

Walk in expecting a tourist trap and the wine list surprises you — Sherry flights, Rías Baixas Albariño, and a Rioja section that actually makes sense with the food. This is not a chain wine list phoning it in; there's a clear Spanish identity here that most Florida beach restaurants wouldn't dare attempt. It's not perfect, but it's pointed.
The list leans hard into Spain — Rioja Crianza and Reserva from names like Marqués de Cáceres, Muga, and Luis Cañas anchor the reds, while Ribera del Duero and Garnacha-based options give you some range. The Sherry program is the sleeper hit: Fino, Amontillado, and Oloroso from Jerez, which you almost never see properly represented at a Florida waterfront spot. California and Washington bottles show up as supporting acts for guests who won't venture into unfamiliar territory, and a Mendoza Malbec from Norton rounds out the South American cameo. Gaps exist — no Portuguese wines, no deeper dives into smaller Spanish DOs — but for this context, the focus is commendable.
Somewhere between 15 and 25 pours depending on the season, which is a solid count for a beach destination. You can get Albariño, Tempranillo, Garnacha rosé, Cava, and even work your way into a Muga Reserva for $15 a glass — rare for this format. The rotation doesn't appear to change much, but what's here is well-chosen enough that you won't feel stuck.
Torres Sangre de Toro Garnacha/Carignan — $11/glass
Retail on this bottle barely clears $12, so you're essentially drinking it at cost. It's an easy-drinking, food-friendly Spanish red that holds up to the bold flavors of a Cuban sandwich or a seafood stew without demanding your full attention.
Sherry — Fino, Amontillado, or Oloroso from Jerez
Most people at a Florida beach restaurant are ordering Sauvignon Blanc and moving on. The Sherry program here is a genuine rarity — a proper representation of one of Spain's greatest wine traditions. Order the Amontillado before your meal or the Oloroso alongside a rich dish and you'll wonder why you don't do this everywhere.
Muga Rioja Reserva
Muga Reserva is a genuinely good wine, but at $15 a glass against a $30 retail bottle, you're hitting a full 100% markup — the steepest on the list. Buy it at a wine shop and save it for a special occasion. Here, you're paying for the view as much as the wine.
Martín Códax Albariño + Paella Valenciana
Albariño from Rías Baixas is practically engineered for seafood — high acid, bright citrus, a whisper of salinity. It cuts through the saffron-rich rice and lifts the clams and shrimp in a classic paella without competing with any of it. Order this combination and you'll feel like you planned your entire evening around it.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Columbia Sand Key isn't trying to be a wine destination, but it accidentally built a Spanish wine list that earns respect — especially at these prices. If you're eating paella on the Gulf Coast, you could do a lot worse than Albariño at near-retail and a proper Sherry poured without apology.
Westshore · Clearwater · Fine-dining steakhouse
The Capital Grille is a reliable machine — the wine program is competent, well-staffed, and properly executed, but the markups are steep and the list plays it extremely safe. Send a friend here for a business dinner, but tell them to order Jordan before anyone at the table reaches for the Opus One.

Fleming's is a reliable machine — excellent execution, real wine depth by-the-glass, staff that knows the list, and no surprises in a bad way. Just don't expect discovery; expect comfort, and budget accordingly for markup.

Guppy's won't win any awards for adventurous curation, but the list is fairly priced, thoughtfully stocked for a seafood crowd, and broad enough that everyone at the table finds something. Send a friend here for the grouper and tell them to drink the Cloudy Bay.

E&E Stakeout Grill is a perfectly decent neighborhood steakhouse wine list that asks too much on most nights — but Wine Wednesday flips the math entirely and makes this one of the better value plays in the Clearwater area. Come on a Wednesday, order the Chianti Classico, and you'll have zero complaints.

Clearwater Beach · Clearwater · Mediterranean and Mexican-inspired wine bar and bistro
This is the best wine program you're likely to find within walking distance of Clearwater Beach, and that's not faint praise — it's a genuine destination for the wine-curious crowd that usually has to settle for whatever's on draft. Wednesday's half-price U.S. bottle deal seals it: show up, order spaghetti, drink better than you planned.
