First Impression
Walk into C'est Le Vin and the rustic cellar aesthetic does most of the heavy lifting β this place looks like it means business. Two hundred-plus bottles is a serious commitment for a Shockoe Bottom tapas spot, and the global breadth of the list signals someone with genuine curiosity put this thing together. The vibe, with jazz nights and poetry readings floating through, is half wine bar, half neighborhood living room.
Selection Deep Dive
The list roams confidently β Portugal, New Zealand, Italy, the RhΓ΄ne, California β and the inclusion of Virginia wines gives it a local anchor that feels earned rather than performative. A 200-bottle cellar for a tapas bar in Richmond is genuinely impressive, and the range from easy-drinking Vinho Verde to Cabernet Sauvignon suggests they're trying to serve everyone from the casual sipper to the more curious drinker. That said, the markup data tells a less flattering story: bottles retailing for $10-15 regularly land on the menu at $26-39, which is aggressive. The variety earns real respect; the pricing takes some of that goodwill back.
By the Glass
Twenty to thirty by-the-glass options is a serious pour program and one of the strongest arguments for coming here on a weeknight. The range covers enough ground β sparkling, white, red, rosΓ© β that you can genuinely build a tasting flight without committing to a bottle. We'd love to see more rotation, but the sheer count gives you room to explore.
Valle Martello Montepulciano D'Abruzzo 2017 β $30
It's still marked up 150% over retail, but Montepulciano punches above its weight β dark fruit, rustic grip, enough structure to handle a table full of tapas. At $30 it's the most food-friendly bottle on the list that won't leave you wincing at the check.
Messia Frisante Vinho Verde NV
Most people walk past anything with 'Vinho Verde' on a wine bar list and order something they already know. Don't. This lightly sparkling Portuguese white is the perfect antidote to a warm Richmond evening, bright and low-alcohol enough to keep you going through multiple rounds of tapas without tipping over.
Les Abeilles Cotes Du Rhone 2018
A 200% markup is hard to justify on any bottle, and this one retails around $13. There are better values on this list β this is the bottle that exists to subsidize the rest of the program. Keep scrolling.
Pikoura Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand 2018 + Vegetarian Tapas
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc brings the citrus and herb brightness that makes vegetable-forward tapas sing. The wine's natural acidity cuts through any olive oil or cheese on the plate and keeps everything tasting fresh through the whole spread.
π² The Bottom Line
C'est Le Vin earns its Wild Card badge β the depth and global range of a 200-bottle list in this kind of intimate, artsy setting is genuinely unexpected, and the by-the-glass program is a Richmond standout. The markups are real and worth knowing going in, but if you treat this as a place to explore rather than a place to spend efficiently, you'll leave happy.
