Walking into a wine bar in Carson City, Nevada, you're not expecting much — and then the list shows up with 21 by-the-glass pours ranging from a $9.50 Guenoc to a $16 La Quercia Montepulciano Reserve, and suddenly you're paying attention. It's a compact program, but somebody made actual choices here rather than just calling a distributor and saying yes to everything. The pricing stays grounded, which in a tourist-adjacent state capital is not a given.
The list leans heavily California — Sonoma Cutrer, Daou, Lava Cap, J Lohr, Cline — with a few smart imports tucked in to break the monotony. The M. Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes du Rhône and La Quercia Montepulciano Reserve show someone was thinking about Old World structure, even if just briefly. There's no Burgundy, no Champagne, no skin-contact anything — this is a crowd-friendly list, but it's curated crowd-friendly, not lazy crowd-friendly. The gap is on the sparkling side: a Vinho Verde rosé and a Moscato d'Asti are the only bubbles in the building.
Every single wine on the list is available by the glass — all 21 of them — which is basically the whole point of the place. The spread runs from $9.50 to $16, which is honest money for Carson City. Rotation appears limited; this reads like a set list rather than a program that changes seasonally.
Lava Cap Barbera 2022 — $15/glass
Lava Cap is a solid El Dorado County producer making wines that punch above their price point, and Barbera at $15 a glass for this quality is a genuine find on a short list. It's the kind of red that makes you order a second pour without thinking about it.
M. Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes du Rhône 2023
Most people at a casual wine bar walk straight past a Rhône blend and order the Cab. That's a mistake here. Chapoutier's Belleruche is a reliable, food-friendly Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre that offers real Southern French character at $14 a glass — and it's almost certainly the most interesting red on the list that nobody orders.
Col Dei Venti Moscato d'Asti 2023
At $16 a glass, this is the priciest pour on the list and Moscato d'Asti is a low-alcohol, lightly sweet sparkler you can find for under $15 a bottle retail. The math doesn't work in your favor here.
Daou Sauvignon Blanc 2024 + Charcuterie board
Daou's Sauvignon Blanc brings enough citrus and herb to cut through cured meats and fatty cheese without overwhelming anything on the board — it's a natural anchor for a grazing spread at a wine bar setting.
The Bottom Line
Carson Piazza Bar is doing something genuinely worthwhile in a city that doesn't have to try this hard. It's not a destination wine list, but for an all-by-the-glass program at fair prices with a few smart picks thrown in, it earns a visit — especially if you grab the Barbera or the Chapoutier.
