Sports Bar Wine List, No Surprises Here

You walk into Carolina Ale House and the wine list is exactly what you'd expect at a place with 40 TVs and a Carolina Burger on the menu. Eight options by the glass, all recognizable names from the grocery store aisle, priced like they're doing you a favor.
The list is California top-to-bottom, leaning on the kind of brands that sell themselves — Robert Mondavi, Meiomi — because nobody here is being asked to explain what they're pouring. There's no depth, no regional curiosity, no attempt to surprise you. It's a wine list designed to check a box, not to make anyone's night. If you're hoping for a Willamette Valley Pinot or anything with a story, you're in the wrong building.
Eight pours is a reasonable count for a sports bar, but the range is thin — expect the usual suspects across white, red, and maybe a rosé. There's no rotation happening here; this list looks like it hasn't changed since the location opened.
Meiomi Pinot Noir — $38
It's still a 90% markup over retail, but at least Meiomi is a drinkable, crowd-pleasing Pinot with enough fruit to hold up to the BBQ Nachos. If you're going to spend money on wine here, this is the least painful option on the list.
Meiomi Pinot Noir
It's not exactly a hidden gem in the traditional sense, but in a list this uninspired, the Meiomi is the only bottle doing any heavy lifting. Order it by the glass to keep the damage manageable.
Robert Mondavi Private Selection Chardonnay
A 150% markup on a $12 retail bottle is hard to justify anywhere, let alone at a sports bar. You can grab this off the shelf at Publix on your way home and drink it for a quarter of the price.
Meiomi Pinot Noir + BBQ Nachos
The fruit-forward, slightly smoky profile of Meiomi can actually hang with the sweet-savory BBQ sauce on the nachos. It's not a fine dining pairing, but it works better than a Chardonnay drowning next to pulled pork.
❌ The Bottom Line
Carolina Ale House is a perfectly good sports bar — order a craft beer, watch the game, enjoy the nachos. But the wine list is an afterthought at afterthought prices, and we'd feel bad sending a friend here for anything in a glass.
Downtown Greenville · Greenville · Greek and Mediterranean
Kouzina is a counter-service gyro spot with a Greek wine list that would embarrass a lot of full-service restaurants — that's the Wild Card situation right there. If you're anywhere near Greenville and curious about what Greece actually tastes like in a glass, this is a weirdly perfect place to find out.

The Jones Oyster Co. is doing something genuinely thoughtful with wine in a market that doesn't always demand it, and the Loire-forward approach earns real respect. It's not a destination wine list, but if you're eating oysters in downtown Greenville, you're in good hands.

Ruth's Chris Greenville is a reliable machine — the wine list won't challenge you, staff won't geek out with you, and you'll probably pay more than you should. But if you want a well-stored Napa Cab with a perfect ribeye and zero surprises, it delivers every time.

Firebirds is a reliable wine stop if you're already there for dinner and want something familiar done reasonably well — just don't expect the list to challenge or surprise you. Send a friend here for the filet; warn them to skip the Chardonnay markup.

Larkin's on the River is a reliable spot if you want a crowd-pleasing California Cab with your steak and don't mind paying a premium for the Falls Park backdrop. Don't come expecting the wine list to surprise you — come for the river view and order the Jordan.

Soby's has one of the most legitimately impressive wine programs in the entire Southeast, and the fact that it's anchored in Greenville rather than a major metro makes it worth a detour on its own. If you're anywhere near South Carolina and you care about wine, you owe yourself a seat at this table.

Catablu is exactly what it needs to be for its neighborhood — a reliable, thoughtfully maintained list that won't embarrass you on a date night or bore you entirely. It's not a destination wine list, but it's a solid supporting act for a kitchen that clearly takes food seriously.

BJ's is a fine place to drink a craft beer and eat a Pizookie. It is not a place to drink wine. Order a Brewhouse Blonde, skip the wine list entirely, and save your wine night for somewhere that cares.

The Cheesecake Factory is a perfectly fine place to eat — the wine list just isn't a reason to go. Order a cocktail, split a bottle of Santa Margherita if you must, and save your wine curiosity for somewhere that earned it.
