Wingman Metrics
Walking into Baroncini, the wine list reads exactly like you'd expect from a neighborhood Italian spot trying to cover the bases — Pinot Grigio, Chianti, done. It's not going to surprise you, but it's not going to embarrass you either. The vibe is cozy and date-night-ready, which buys the list some goodwill.
The list leans hard into northern and central Italy, with the Veneto and Tuscany doing most of the heavy lifting. Pinot Grigio shows up in triplicate — Santa Cristina, Cavit, and Ecco Domani are all reliable producers, but together they represent a missed opportunity to show off even a single interesting Italian white. Chianti gets the same treatment on the red side with Banfi and Ruffino holding down the fort — both respectable, neither exciting. The ceiling tops out around $120 a bottle, which suggests there's some range, but the accessible end of the list is where most diners will stay.
Glass pours run $7–$9, which is genuinely reasonable for this market. The selection mirrors the bottle list — safe Italian varietals that go down easy with a plate of pasta. There's no real rotation happening here; what's on the menu is what's on the menu.
Banfi Chianti Superiore DOCG — $32
At $32 a bottle, this is the most food-friendly wine on the list relative to its price. Banfi's Chianti Superiore has more structure than the standard DOCG, with enough acidity to cut through rich pasta sauces. Retail around $13 means the markup is reasonable by restaurant standards — you're not getting gouged.
Santa Cristina Pinot Grigio delle Venezie
Yes, it's Pinot Grigio. Yes, it's everywhere. But the Santa Cristina is the Antinori entry-level label, and at $28 a bottle it's the most pedigree you'll get on this list for the money. Most people skip it for the Cavit out of habit — don't.
Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio delle Venezie
At $28 a bottle, you're paying the same as the Santa Cristina for a wine that's just... less. Ecco Domani is a mass-market pour that belongs on a happy hour menu, not a restaurant list where better options exist at the same price point.
Banfi Chianti Superiore DOCG + Lasagne Alla Bolognese
Chianti and Bolognese is a cliché for a reason — the wine's acidity and earthy cherry fruit are built to handle rich, meaty ragu. The Banfi has enough weight to stand up to the lasagne without overwhelming it.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Baroncini is a perfectly reliable Italian wine list in a perfectly reliable Italian restaurant — it won't wow you, but it won't let you down either. Send a friend here knowing they'll eat well and drink decently without getting taken to the cleaners.

Order the margarita. Seriously. But if someone at the table insists on wine, the Barefoot pours are priced so close to retail that you're not getting hurt — just don't expect anything more than that.

Pagliai's earns its legendary status in Iowa City as a pizza destination — the wine list, however, is an afterthought that nobody on staff or in the kitchen appears to think about much. Order a beer, order a soda, order another slice, and save the wine conversation for somewhere else.

Iowa River Power is a perfectly respectable steakhouse wine list in a genuinely memorable room — but the list plays it too safe and prices too high to be anything more than serviceable. Send a friend here for the ambiance and the prime rib; tell them to pick carefully on the wine.

Bluebird earns serious love for its food, but the wine list is pure filler — seven grocery-store bottles on a set-and-forget program. Order the biscuits and gravy, grab a coffee, and save the wine for somewhere that cares.

Micky's is a great Irish pub — for Guinness, whiskey, and a Reuben at midnight. The wine program is an afterthought dressed up as a menu section, and nobody on either side of the bar is pretending otherwise. Order the beer.

One Twenty Six is an anomaly — a downtown Iowa City gastropub with a wine list that would hold its own in a Chicago neighborhood restaurant. The markups on trophy bottles get steep fast, but there's real depth here if you know where to look, and the French selections alone are worth the reservation.

Carmella's is the kind of place that has no business having this good a wine list — and that's meant as a compliment. The markups on the top-shelf bottles sting, but the depth and seriousness of the Italian selection alone make it worth a visit for anyone who wants to drink well in Wisconsin.

Victoria's isn't a wine destination, but the prices are honest, the Italian picks are legitimate, and a $10 Chianti Riserva with a massive plate of pasta is a genuinely good night out. Send your friends here if they want comfort food and an easy bottle — just don't expect anyone to geek out over the list with you.

Carmella's is doing something genuinely unusual for its market — a thoughtfully curated, Italy-forward list with real cellar cred that most Midwest restaurants wouldn't attempt. The markups get steep at the top end, but if you navigate the list smart, there's a serious dinner to be had here.
