Wingman Metrics
The wine list at The Brown Bottle reads exactly like the restaurant looks — warm, familiar, no surprises. It's a tight Italian-California lineup that knows its lane and doesn't wander far from it. For a cozy Burlington Street spot built around lasagna and veal parm, this is honestly about what you'd expect.
The list leans heavily on Italian staples and California workhorses, with 40-70 bottles covering the expected territory — Chianti Classico, Pinot Grigio, and a few bottles that punch above the room's weight class. The Antinori Tignanello showing up on a casual Iowa City Italian menu is genuinely impressive and the one moment this list reminds you someone thought about it. Outside of that, you're not getting deep into Barolo or skin-contact Friulian whites — it's Chianti, Pinot Grigio, and friends. Gaps in Southern Italy and literally everything outside Italy and California are real, but this is comfort-food territory and the list matches the mission.
Eight to fourteen options by the glass is a solid spread for a neighborhood Italian spot, and the pricing — $8 to $14 a pour — is reasonable for Iowa City. Don't expect rotating gems or anything that'll make you text your wine group, but you'll find a clean Pinot Grigio or a Chianti that works just fine with your pasta.
Ruffino Chianti Classico — $35–$45
Ruffino Chianti Classico is a reliable, food-friendly bottle that drinks well above its price point here. It's the obvious call with anything on this menu that has tomato in it, which is most things.
Antinori Tignanello
Nobody expects to see a Tignanello on a menu in Iowa City, and that's exactly why you should order it when you do. A Super Tuscan at this level — Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc — is a genuinely serious bottle and a rare find outside a destination wine list.
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio
Santa Margherita is the house Pinot Grigio of restaurants that haven't updated their wine list in fifteen years. It's not bad, but it's overpriced for what it is and you're paying for the brand recognition. There's almost certainly a better glass option available for the same money.
Ruffino Chianti Classico + Lasagna
Chianti Classico's bright acidity and firm tannins were basically engineered to cut through rich meat and cheese. This is as close to a layup as wine pairing gets — just order both and don't overthink it.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The Brown Bottle is a reliable neighborhood Italian that won't embarrass you on a date or a family dinner — the wine list is safe, the prices are fair, and the Tignanello is a genuine reason to look twice. Don't come here hunting for discovery, but do come here for a cold night, a bowl of pasta, and a Chianti that gets the job done.
Downtown Iowa City · Iowa City · Farm-to-table American steakhouse and gastropub
Iowa Chop House is a perfectly competent steakhouse wine list that plays it safe from start to finish — you'll drink well, you'll pay fairly steep prices for the privilege, and you won't be surprised by anything. For Iowa City, that's honestly good enough most nights.

Joseph's is doing more than most Iowa City restaurants bother to do with wine, and the Champagne section alone earns some respect. But steep markups and a list that plays it safe keep it from being anything more than a reliable night out — solid enough to enjoy, not worth planning your evening around the bottle.

Basta isn't a wine destination, but it doesn't need to be — it's a fun downtown Italian spot with a reliable-enough list and one of the best recurring happy hour deals in Iowa City. Show up between 4 and 6, drink the Soave, eat the pizza, and don't overthink it.

Order the margarita. Seriously. But if someone at the table insists on wine, the Barefoot pours are priced so close to retail that you're not getting hurt — just don't expect anything more than that.

Pagliai's earns its legendary status in Iowa City as a pizza destination — the wine list, however, is an afterthought that nobody on staff or in the kitchen appears to think about much. Order a beer, order a soda, order another slice, and save the wine conversation for somewhere else.

Iowa River Power is a perfectly respectable steakhouse wine list in a genuinely memorable room — but the list plays it too safe and prices too high to be anything more than serviceable. Send a friend here for the ambiance and the prime rib; tell them to pick carefully on the wine.

If you're here for the Chicken Alfredo and unlimited breadsticks, that's a completely defensible life choice — but the wine list is not a reason to come. Order the Chianti, keep it to one glass, and let the food carry the evening.

Olive Garden Melbourne's wine list exists to move volume, not to make you drink better — and it succeeds at exactly that goal. Order the Chianti if you must order wine, but honestly, this is a cocktail situation.

Maggiano's isn't where you go to discover wine — it's where you go to eat a mountain of pasta and not overthink the bottle. Come on a Tuesday, when half-price wine turns a steep list into a genuinely solid deal, and you'll leave happy.
