First Impression
You're at a historic inn tucked into the Georgia countryside, and the wine list arrives looking like someone actually gave it thought — not just grabbed the distributor's top-ten sheet. The California focus is clear from the jump, which makes sense given the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence they've been holding since 2022. It's not a list that takes risks, but it's not embarrassing either.
Selection Deep Dive
The 80-120 bottle list leans hard into California, and sommelier Bonnie Vaught has stocked the hits: Caymus Cab, Jordan Cab, Stag's Leap Chardonnay, Duckhorn Merlot, Rombauer Chardonnay, Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc. These are crowd-pleasers, full stop — names your aunt recognizes and your wine-obsessed friend sighs at. There's almost no Old World presence to speak of, and nothing that'll surprise a curious drinker. What you do get is a reliably executed California list that matches the food and the setting without demanding you know anything beyond 'I like Chardonnay.'
By the Glass
Ten to sixteen options by the glass at $8-$14 is a solid range for a destination dining spot in rural Georgia. The pricing is reasonable enough that you won't feel punished for ordering a second pour. Don't expect much rotation — this feels like a list that gets refreshed seasonally at best, not a by-the-glass program where you're hunting for the weekly surprise.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon — $120
Jordan consistently overdelivers for the price in the retail world, and if they're not marking it up beyond retail here, it's the smartest bottle on the list — structured, food-friendly, and a name worth drinking rather than just recognizing.
Cakebread Cellars Sauvignon Blanc
Everyone comes here ordering the Chardonnay or the Cab, but this Sauvignon Blanc is the underdog worth ordering — bright, crisp, and a genuinely good match for lighter Southern fare that the bigger reds will steamroll.
Rombauer Chardonnay
Rombauer is fine, but it's also on every restaurant list in America and rarely at a price that makes sense when you can buy it at Costco on the way home. Unless it's priced at near-retail, pass and put that money toward the Jordan.
Sonoma-Cutrer Russian River Ranches Chardonnay + Eggs Benedict over salmon
The richness of the hollandaise and the salmon's fat need something with enough acidity and fruit to cut through — Sonoma-Cutrer's Russian River Ranches brings both without overwhelming the delicacy of the dish.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Woodlands is a reliable wine destination for what it is — a refined Southern inn with a California-leaning list and a real sommelier keeping it honest. Don't come expecting adventurous pours, but do come knowing you'll drink well alongside some genuinely good food.
