The wine list at West End Tavern isn't trying to impress you — it's trying to feed you something cold while you watch the bay. That's not an insult. The list is short, unpretentious, and leans hard into what makes Traverse City special: wines grown within 20 miles of your table.
At 15–25 bottles, this isn't a deep cellar — it's a curated rack with a clear regional identity. Old Mission Peninsula producers like Black Star Farms and Chateau Grand Traverse anchor the Michigan section, which is the right call for a waterfront spot in TC. California fills in the gaps for guests who aren't ready to go local, keeping things accessible without making the list feel lazy. Don't expect discovery-level obscurities here, but the bones are honest and the regional commitment is real.
Eight to twelve options by the glass is genuinely solid for a casual tavern at this price point, and it means you can work through a couple of pours without committing to a bottle. The glass program skews toward the approachable end — nothing weird, nothing challenging — which fits the room perfectly. We'd love to see a rotating local pick, but what's here gets the job done.
Chateau Grand Traverse Riesling — $12
Old Mission Peninsula Riesling at a tavern price point is a minor miracle. Michigan Riesling punches well above its weight nationally, and Grand Traverse does it consistently. Order this with whitefish and don't look back.
Black Star Farms Arcturos Pinot Noir
Most people at a waterfront burger bar reach for something red and California without thinking. The Arcturos Pinot from Black Star Farms is grown up the road on Old Mission and has the kind of earthy, light-bodied character that actually works with food — not just with itself. It's the local pick most tables skip, and they're wrong to.

The California options on this list exist to comfort the wine-shy, not to excite anyone. When you're sitting 15 miles from some of the best Riesling and Pinot Noir vineyards in the Midwest, defaulting to a middling Cab from Napa is a waste of geography. Skip it.
Chateau Grand Traverse Riesling + Lake Michigan Whitefish
Dry Michigan Riesling and Great Lakes whitefish is one of those regional combinations that exists for a reason — bright acidity cuts through the fish's richness, a faint stone fruit note echoes any citrus prep, and you feel like you're actually eating somewhere specific. This is the move.

West End Tavern isn't a wine destination, but it's doing something right by leaning into what grows in its own backyard. If you're in Traverse City and want local wine without ceremony, pull up a patio chair and order the Riesling.

Mackinaw Brewing is a great place to drink beer in downtown Traverse City, and nobody should walk in expecting otherwise. If wine is your thing, order the local Riesling, appreciate the nod to Michigan wine country, and let the rest of the list do its quiet, unremarkable job.
