Wingman Metrics
You don't expect to find Chablis Premier Cru and Muscadet on a wine list in Traverse City, but Umbo earns a second look fast. The list is compact — we counted somewhere in the 40-60 range — but it's clearly been curated with the food in mind, not just assembled from a distributor's default catalog. Someone here actually thought about what goes with a raw bar.
The regional focus tells you everything: Burgundy, Loire Valley, Northern Italy, and a nod to the Pacific Northwest and Michigan locals. That's a smart axis for a seafood program — acid-driven, mineral-forward wines that make oysters sing rather than fight them. The Muscadet Sèvre et Maine and Grüner Veltliner are workhorses in the right hands, and the Sancerre gives the table something to get excited about. What's missing is depth — a single Chablis Premier Cru is a great call, but if it sells out on a Friday night, what's the backup plan?
Ten to sixteen by-the-glass options is a solid number for a room this size, and the selection skews white and lean, which is the right instinct for a raw bar. We didn't find evidence of a rotating program, which is a missed opportunity — a list this thoughtful deserves a little more movement to stay interesting across return visits.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine — Unknown
Muscadet is perpetually underpriced in the market, and at a raw bar, it's basically a cheat code — salinity on salinity, clean finish, and it keeps the check from getting out of hand. Order this before anything else.
Grüner Veltliner
Most tables at a seafood spot will default to Sancerre or Chablis and never look back. That's fine, but the Grüner is worth the detour — peppery, crisp, and underrated by American diners who haven't spent enough time in Vienna wine bars.
Sancerre
It's the right wine for oysters in theory, but Sancerre gets marked up aggressively at polished casual spots like this, and you're almost certainly paying restaurant-gouge pricing for something you could find at retail for half the price. The Muscadet or Grüner will do the same job for less damage.
Chablis Premier Cru + Oysters
This is the pairing Umbo was built for. Chablis Premier Cru — pure Kimmeridgian chalk and green apple — cuts right through the brine and fat of a freshly shucked oyster without overwhelming it. Classic for a reason.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Umbo is quietly one of the more interesting wine programs in northern Michigan, built with a clear point of view around Old World acid and seafood compatibility. The pricing is a stretch and the list could use more depth, but if you're eating oysters in Traverse City, this is where you want to be drinking.

Mackinaw Brewing is a great place to drink beer in downtown Traverse City, and nobody should walk in expecting otherwise. If wine is your thing, order the local Riesling, appreciate the nod to Michigan wine country, and let the rest of the list do its quiet, unremarkable job.

West End Tavern isn't a wine destination, but it's doing something right by leaning into what grows in its own backyard. If you're in Traverse City and want local wine without ceremony, pull up a patio chair and order the Riesling.
