First Impression
Walking into Waters Edge, you're greeted by a skylit dining room that feels more Napa tasting room than Norfolk bistro β in the best way. The wine list lands on your table and the first thing you notice is that almost everything on it is their own label, produced in-house. That's either exciting or terrifying, and here it leans exciting.
Selection Deep Dive
This is a house-label winery masquerading as a wine bar, and the range is genuinely impressive for what it is. You've got Barolos, Nebbiolo, Tempranillo, Pinotage, Gewurztraminer, Petit Verdot, Ports, and even an Ice Wine Style β that's not a grocery store checklist, that's real ambition. The globe-trotting inspiration hits California, Italy, France, Chile, Australia, Spain, and Germany, so if you want a Don Vino Nebbiolo next to a Cascade Riesling, this is your place. There are gaps β no serious old-world imports, no single-vineyard statements β but for a local winery-bistro hybrid, the breadth earns respect.
By the Glass
The by-the-glass program is legitimately one of the best reasons to come here β 25 to 35 options in the $8β$10 range means you can explore without committing to a bottle. That kind of glass-pour depth is almost unheard of at this price point. Rotation isn't heavily advertised, so don't expect a dynamic seasonal program, but the sheer volume gives you plenty to work through.
Waters Edge Luna Bianca Chardonnay β $27
Retails around $20 and they're only marking it up 35% β for a sit-down bistro experience with that room, that's basically giving it away. Order the bottle.
Don Vino Nebbiolo
Most people at a table in Norfolk are ordering the Cab or the Merlot. Nebbiolo β the grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco β is a left-field pick that shows this list has more going on under the surface than the crowd pleasers suggest.
Peach Mango Sparkling
Fruit-forward sparkling wines with flavor additives are a crowd-pleaser that doesn't tell you anything about what this winery can actually do. If you're in a sparkling mood, the straight Brut or RosΓ© Sparkling is a better window into the house style.
Vieux Chateau Du Roi GSM + Virginia Hot Crab Dip
A GSM blend β Grenache, Syrah, MourvΓ¨dre β brings enough fruit and spice to stand up to the richness of a crab dip without steamrolling the seafood. It's the kind of pairing that makes you look smart at the table without trying.
π² The Bottom Line
Waters Edge is doing something genuinely unusual β a house-label winery with real variety, honest prices, and a room that punches well above its zip code. If you go in expecting a traditional wine list you'll be confused; if you go in curious, you'll leave happy.
