First Impression

You don't expect a 400-bottle list in Suffolk, Virginia — and yet here we are. The wine program at Vintage Tavern has earned multiple Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence, which tells you this isn't an afterthought. Walk in past the exposed beams and fireplace and the list immediately signals that someone here actually cares.

Selection Deep Dive

The list leans California-heavy — Jordan Cab, Duckhorn Merlot, Rombauer Chardonnay — with serious nods to Bordeaux and Burgundy that give the whole thing some Old World credibility. The Virginia section is a genuinely nice touch; local producers rarely get this kind of platform at a restaurant operating at this level. Peter Michael Chardonnay sitting alongside Domaine d'Henri Chablis tells you the range is real, not just padded with filler. The gaps are minor — depth in Rhône and Italy would round this out — but for a Southern American spot in coastal Virginia, this list punches well above its weight class.

By the Glass

Twenty to thirty pours by the glass is a serious commitment and suggests the kitchen is moving enough wine to keep things rotating without oxidation risk. We'd expect the California heavy-hitters to dominate the glass list, though a Chablis or two on pour would make us very happy. Staff with sommelier training means you can actually ask what's good right now and get a real answer.

💰Best Value

Filius Vassefelux 2018 — $72

At roughly double retail, it's not a steal, but it's the least punishing markup on the list and it's a wine most tables will find genuinely interesting. In a lineup where the Foxglove Chardonnay gets marked up 180%, this one looks like a bargain by comparison.

💎Hidden Gem

Domaine d'Henri Chablis St. Pierre 2019

Most tables at a Southern American steakhouse are reaching for California Chardonnay or a Cab. This Chablis gets overlooked every time, which is a shame — it's a mineral-driven, no-butter, no-oak contrast that cuts through rich dishes beautifully. Seek it out.

Skip This

Foxglove Chardonnay 2018

A $20 retail bottle priced at $56 is a 180% markup on a wine that was never meant to be a splurge. It's fine wine for a Tuesday night at home, not a $56 restaurant pick when there's actual Chablis and Peter Michael on the same list.

🍽️Perfect Pairing

Domaine d'Henri Chablis St. Pierre 2019 + Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes

Clean, mineral, unoaked Chablis and lump crab is a no-brainer — the wine's salinity and acidity lift the sweetness of the crab without getting in its way. This is the kind of pairing that makes you put down your fork and say something embarrassing.

✔️ The Bottom Line

Vintage Tavern has no business having a wine list this serious in a suburb of Norfolk — and we mean that as a high compliment. The markups take some of the shine off, but a sommelier on staff, 400 bottles, and a genuine Virginia section make this the best wine destination for miles around.
