Gumbo Town Hides a Surprisingly Legit Wine List

Wingman Metrics
Walking into a Cajun joint in downtown Spokane, you're not exactly bracing yourself for a Condrieu. But Vieux Carré's wine list surprises — it's concise, shows actual taste, and has no business being this interesting next to a bowl of gumbo. The French Quarter theme isn't just décor; someone clearly raided both the Rhône Valley and Washington State before printing this thing.
The list clocks in at 30-50 bottles but punches above its weight with genuine selections across Washington, France, and California. You've got Tablas Creek's Esprit Blanc sitting alongside Francois Villard's Condrieu and Guigal's Côte Rôtie — that's not an accident, that's someone who actually cares. The Washington representation is solid with Chateau Ste. Michelle and Ponzi making appearances, and the Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé feels perfectly at home with the Southern-inflected menu. The gaps are real — no Oregon beyond Ponzi, nothing from Spain or Italy — but what's here has a coherent point of view.
Six to ten pours by the glass in the $10–$16 range, which is reasonable for downtown Spokane. The specific BTG lineup isn't fully published, but the price ceiling suggests you're getting mid-tier selections rather than anything from the prestige end of the bottle list. Tuesday's half-price bottle deal makes the glass program largely irrelevant one night a week anyway.
Tablas Creek Esprit Blanc 2022 — $65
At $65, this Paso Robles Rhône-style white retails for $30, so the markup stings, but it's still the most interesting white on the list at a price that won't wreck your evening. More importantly, it's a genuinely great bottle — Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Picpoul doing something you can't find on most Spokane lists at any price.
Qupe Bien Nacido Hillside Syrah 2021
Most tables here are ordering Pinot Noir without thinking twice, and the Qupe Bien Nacido Syrah sits there getting ignored. That's a mistake. Bob Lindquist's Santa Maria Valley Syrah is cool-climate, peppery, and seriously food-friendly — exactly what you want next to a bowl of spiced-up Cajun anything.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Chardonnay 2022
At $48 for a bottle that retails at $18, this is the list's most lopsided markup — a 167% premium on a widely available, nothing-special grocery store Chardonnay. It's the lazy pour and a bad deal. Spend the extra $17 and get the Tablas Creek instead.
Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 2023 + Crawfish Étouffée
Tempier's Bandol Rosé is built for this: Mourvèdre-driven, saline, and herbal, it stands up to the butter-rich roux and the briny sweetness of crawfish without getting steamrolled. Provence meets Louisiana and somehow it makes perfect sense.
Tuesday — Half-price bottles on the full wine list, all day Tuesday. Excludes sparkling and reserve selections.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Vieux Carré is a Wild Card in the best way — a Cajun bar in Spokane with a wine list that has a genuine personality. Markups are steep across the board, but show up on Tuesday with a group and those half-price bottles turn this into one of the better wine deals in the city.

West Downtown / Riverside · Spokane · Barbecue / American Tavern
The Blackbird is a genuinely good barbecue tavern that simply doesn't care about wine, and the steep markups on uninspired bottles make that indifference expensive. Come for the smoked meats and a cold beer — if you insist on wine, grab the Milbrandt and move on.

Downtown Spokane · Spokane · Fondue / Upscale Casual
The Melting Pot Spokane isn't a wine destination, and it's not trying to be — but the Washington State anchors on this list are genuinely good, and if you stick to those, you'll drink well enough for the occasion. Come for the fondue experience, order the Ste. Michelle, and save the serious wine night for somewhere else.

1919 won't blow any minds, but for a hotel bar in downtown Spokane it earns genuine respect for keeping Washington State producers front and center. Come for the room, stay for the Beresan — just don't expect any surprises in the pricing.

Barrister is a genuine Wild Card: a serious urban winery tucked into Spokane's rail district that most wine travelers blow past on their way to Walla Walla. If you're in eastern Washington and you haven't stopped here, you owe yourself a visit.

Toulouse Petit is a Wild Card in the best sense — a Cajun kitchen in Lower Queen Anne with a sommelier and a bottle of Weinbach Riesling hiding in plain sight. Come for the étouffée, stay for the wine list that has no business being this good.
