Wingman Metrics
The wine list at VAI's arrives feeling like a well-curated Italian holiday playlist — familiar, approachable, and clearly built with the food in mind. It's not trying to reinvent anything, but with 80-plus bottles and over 40 by-the-glass options, it's punching well above the typical suburban Italian spot. You're not going to find anything that surprises a seasoned collector, but you're also not going to get burned.
The list leans hard into its Italian identity, with Tuscany and Piedmont doing the heavy lifting — Super Tuscan blends and actual Barolo and Barbaresco slots give this list some real backbone that most neighborhoods restaurants skip entirely. Sicily shows up with Nero d'Avola, which is a smart, food-friendly addition that fits the kitchen's wood-fired personality. California Cabernet rounds out the new world side, and sparkling gets proper representation with both Prosecco and Franciacorta — that Franciacorta nod is a nice touch that most diners will walk right past. The gaps are in natural wine and anything from lesser-known Italian regions like Campania, Friuli, or Abruzzo, so if you're hunting for discovery pours, you'll need to manage expectations.
Forty-plus by-the-glass options is legitimately impressive for a neighborhood spot in Naperville — that's more than some dedicated wine bars pull off. The $12–$22 range keeps things accessible without scraping the bottom, and having Franciacorta available by the glass is the kind of small detail that separates a thoughtful program from a lazy one. We'd love to see more rotation, though — the list reads like it doesn't change much, which means no reason to keep coming back to explore.
Sicilian Nero d'Avola — $13
Nero d'Avola at the lower end of their by-the-glass range gives you a wine with actual character — dark fruit, savory edge, food-friendly — for the price of a craft cocktail. It's the move when the wood-fired pizza hits the table.
Franciacorta
Most tables at VAI's are ordering Prosecco without a second thought, but Franciacorta is Italy's answer to Champagne — méthode traditionnelle, real complexity, and a step up in every measurable way. It's sitting right there on the list and almost nobody orders it.
California Cabernet Sauvignon
In an Italian-forward list, the California Cab feels like a concession to the 'I only drink Cab' crowd rather than a deliberate choice. You're eating wood-fired pasta and Neapolitan pizza — there's no reason to default to Napa when Barolo and Super Tuscans are right there doing the same job better.
Barolo + Wood-fired steak
Barolo's tannins and acidity were practically engineered for charred, fatty beef. A wood-fired steak at VAI's is going to have that smoky crust and rich center that needs something with enough grip to stand up to it — and Barolo delivers exactly that without being showy about it.
The Bottom Line
VAI's is the kind of wine program that earns trust without demanding attention — fair prices, real Italian depth, and a by-the-glass count that gives you room to explore. It's not a destination for wine nerds, but it's a genuinely solid neighborhood pick that won't make you regret ordering a second bottle.
· Naperville · American bar and grill
Bar Louie Naperville's wine list exists to check a box, not to excite anyone. Order a beer or a cocktail — the bartenders are more invested in those anyway.

Oak Brook · Naperville · Steakhouse
Gibsons Oak Brook is a reliable, if unexciting, wine stop — the BTG program is genuinely strong in volume, but the markups and brand-safe selections keep it from being anything more than comfortable. Order smart and you'll drink well enough; let the table pick and you'll probably end up with Whispering Angel.

Fire + Wine is doing something genuinely thoughtful in a market that usually settles for Malbec and Pinot Grigio. The sparkling program alone is worth the trip, and the value on the French and Italian bottles is hard to argue with.

Goat & Vine is a one-winery show, and that's both its charm and its ceiling. Send a friend here if they want a casual, curiosity-driven evening — not if they're looking for serious wine range.

Santo Cielo is a great place to have a drink — the atmosphere earns that — but the wine list isn't the reason you're going. Come for the rooftop and the small plates; just don't expect the wine program to match the view.

Entourage earns its stripes as a genuinely thoughtful suburban wine list — fair pricing, more depth than the address suggests, and a by-the-glass program that actually tries. We'd send a friend here without hesitation, especially if they're willing to wander past the Chardonnay section.
