Wingman Metrics
Walk into Twisted Barrel and the first thing you notice is that nobody here is trying to impress you β and somehow that makes everything better. It's a casual, tight-knit tasting room on Turner Road that smells like oak and feels like somebody's living room. The list is short, every bottle is estate-produced, and at $23 flat across the board, the math does something rare: it makes sense.
Thirteen-ish labels deep, all from Lodi, and the range covers far more ground than you'd expect from a boutique room with this kind of footprint. You've got your Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon for the crowd-pleasers, but then things get interesting fast β Carignane, Barbera, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, and Primitivo all show up, pointing to a producer who actually cares about what Lodi can do beyond Zinfandel. The Symphony (a white variety crossing Muscat and Grenache Gris) is the kind of thing you almost never see on a tasting room list anywhere in California, let alone Lodi. The Carbon Malbec, a proprietary blend, rounds out a lineup that reads more like a small Spanish-Italian-Californian love letter than a standard Central Valley pour.
By-the-glass specifics aren't confirmed from available data, so we won't pretend otherwise. The tasting flight covers the core range and is almost certainly your best entry point β at these bottle prices, the economics of glass pours are almost beside the point anyway. Come in, do the flight, buy a bottle.
Primitivo (Lodi) β $23
Primitivo is Zinfandel's Italian cousin, and in Lodi's warm climate it gets ripe and structured in a way that routinely fetches $40β50 from bigger names. Getting it here for $23 flat is the kind of deal that makes you buy two.
Symphony (Lodi)
Most people walk past this one because they've never heard of it. Symphony is a UC Davis-bred white variety with aromatic intensity β floral, stone fruit, slightly exotic β and Twisted Barrel is one of the few tasting rooms in the state pouring it. It's a genuine conversation-starter in a glass.
Cabernet Sauvignon (Lodi)
At $23 it's not a rip-off, but if you're going out of your way to visit Twisted Barrel, drinking the Cab is like ordering a burger at a taco spot. It's fine. But it's also the least interesting thing on the list, and the room has far better stories to tell.
Carignane (Lodi) + Cheese and charcuterie board
Carignane has the acidity and dark fruit to cut through cured meats and hold its own against aged cheeses without overpowering anything. It's an old-vine Lodi grape that rarely gets its moment, and a charcuterie spread is exactly the table where it earns one.
π² The Bottom Line
Twisted Barrel is a Wild Card in the best possible sense β a tiny Lodi room with a $23 flat-price ticket and a list that swings from Symphony to Tempranillo without breaking a sweat. If you think Lodi is just bulk Zinfandel country, this is the correction.

D'Art isn't trying to be a destination wine bar β it's a focused Lodi estate doing honest work with varieties most producers won't touch, at prices that feel almost apologetically fair. If you're driving through wine country Lodi and want something that isn't the same Zinfandel story told for the tenth time, pull over here.
