First Impression
The wine list at The Tailor and the Cook feels like it was built by someone who actually gives a damn โ anchored in New York and California, with a clear point of view rather than a grab-bag of crowd-pleasers. For a Main Street bistro in Utica, that's not what you expect, and that's exactly the point. This is a Wild Card in the best way.
Selection Deep Dive
The list clocks in around 80-120 bottles, which keeps things focused and intentional rather than sprawling and overwhelming. New York gets proper representation with Finger Lakes heavyweights like Dr. Konstantin Frank and Hermann J. Wiemer anchoring the white wine side, while Red Newt Cellars brings local Pinot Noir credibility. California holds down the other flank with Napa Cabernet and Sonoma Chardonnay โ nothing rogue, but solid selections that complement the farm-to-table menu without overshadowing it. The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, held since 2022, is well-earned for a room this size in a market this small.
By the Glass
With 10-16 options by the glass running $10-$18, the pour program punches above its weight for Utica. We'd like to see more rotation and a few wilder picks โ a pรฉt-nat or an orange from the Finger Lakes would fit the vibe โ but what's here is reliable and honestly priced.
Hermann J. Wiemer Dry Riesling โ $45
Wiemer Dry Riesling from the Finger Lakes is one of the most undervalued whites in America, full stop. At a price point that doesn't exploit its cult status, this is a no-brainer order.
Red Newt Cellars Pinot Noir
Most people at a farm-to-table spot reach for California Pinot without a second thought. Red Newt's New York take is leaner, earthier, and a genuinely interesting alternative that most diners will skip right past โ don't be most diners.
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Cab at a restaurant is almost always where markups quietly go to flourish. Without specific producer transparency at this price tier, you're likely paying a premium for the name on the bottle rather than what's in it. Let the Finger Lakes steal the spotlight instead.
Dr. Konstantin Frank Dry Riesling + Pan-seared fish
The bright acidity and stone fruit character in Frank's Dry Riesling cuts right through the richness of a pan-sear while echoing whatever seasonal accompaniment the kitchen is running. It's local, it's sharp, and it makes the fish taste more like itself.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
The Tailor and the Cook is doing something genuinely worth celebrating in Utica โ a thoughtful, regionally grounded wine list with real staff expertise and fair prices. We'd send a friend here for wine without hesitation, especially if they've never given the Finger Lakes a serious shot.
